History is made in some Mid-term races around the country

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 29 is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress

In Georgia, the race for governor between Democrat Stacey Abrams - who is vying to be the first black woman governor in the US - and Republican Brian Kemp remains too close to call. There was a mix of people of all ages (including one girl genuinely thrilled to be spending her fourth birthday at the event), but overwhelmingly, the staff and volunteers and interns and supporters were young people, many of whom were engaging in politics for the first time and were so excited to be there, and so proud of the work they put in. They also picked up two more firsts for Congress: Tlaib is the first-ever Palestinian-American and Omar the first Somalian-American to serve in that office.

The vast majority of newly elected women are Democrats.

Twenty-nine-year-old Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Ocasio-Cortez rose to national prominence in June, when she unseated 10-term incumbent Representative Joe Crowley, the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House.

Women made history in the 2018 midterm elections.

After Tuesday's elections, a record number of women will serve in Congress come January 2019.

A "pink wave" is sending a record number of women to Congress, with more than 110 claiming victory in their House and Senate races-with some contests too close yet to call.

Pressley said, "Now, listen, I know for a fact none of us ran to make history, we ran to make change".

Young women made their voices heard, as well, with two-thirds of voters younger than 30 voting for Democrats for Congress, compared with 32 per cent who voted for Republicans, according to exit polls.

And several of the female candidates broke records of their own. Women were 21 points more likely to vote for Democrats than Republicans in House races - 60 percent voted for Democrats, to 38 percent who voted for Republicans.

"One of the most important victories tonight belongs to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the movement she has sparked", Alexandra Rojas, executive director of Justice Democrats, added. Men, by contrast, were more evenly divided in their vote.

In the past few months, Ocasio-Cortez had traveled around the country to places including Kansas and California to stump for other candidates as part of an effort to move the Democratic party further to the political left.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI, both Democrats, will be the first Muslim-American women to serve in the House. In 1982, 58 per cent of women voted for Democrats and 41 per cent voted for Republicans.

(3) Marsha Blackburn became the first female US Senator from Tennessee.

Going into the midterm elections, 19 per cent of the Governor, Senate and House seats were held by women.
