Google Brings an API to Let Developers Push In-App Updates

Surrounded by supporters House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi celebrates a projected Democratic Party takeover of the House of Representatives

If an update is a part of regular changes and doesn't have any major security fixes, developers have also been provided with the flexible in-app update option. One is a full-screen update where the app user is prevented from using the app until the update has been completed. The prompt comes when the user starts an app, they must update it before using it. The API provides a couple of options to Android developers to push latest updates to their apps.

The tool, very appropriately dubbed the Google Play in-app update API, gives developers the ability to display dialog boxes in unupdated Android games or apps that either encourage players to update their copy to the latest version and allow them to do so while the app is still running.

Google announced today that their Android Files Go storage app is being rebranded to the new name of Files by Google and that in less than a year, they have 30 million monthly users all over the world. "We're testing the API with early access partners and will be launching it to all developers soon". Though there's a catch, the app downloads the update when a user is using it, but it gets installed when you reopen the app.

The flexible update allows the user to continue using the app while the update is downloaded.

This month over 118,000 new projects using Kotlin started in Android Studio, marking a 10-fold increase on a year ago, according to Google.

Along with the new updates API, Google official rolled out support for foldable devices on the eve of celebrating ten-years of Android.
