Dems on track to win control of House

Donald Trump

In Tuesday night's midterm election, Democrats won a majority of the seats in the House of Representatives.

The biggest problem with this sort of analysis is that the Democrats.won most of yesterday's Senate races.

Moreover, history showed that, with rare exceptions, the president's party suffers big setbacks in the first midterm elections of his tenure.

Although Republicans lost their majority in the House to Democrats, they were able to increase their margin in the Senate by several seats and win other key state and gubernatorial races.

The president himself focused on positives as Republicans lost control of the House but made Senate gains. But in Kentucky, one of the top Democratic recruits, retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath, lost her bid to oust to three-term Rep Andy Barr.

But in some other toss-up races, the GOP managed to hold on. Today, his chances for re-election look much more hard than they did just a few months ago.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act. They included New Jersey Sen Cory Booker, California Sen Kamala Harris, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Vice President Joe Biden. The incumbent was reprimanded by a Senate ethics panel after corruption charges were dismissed following a mistrial, turning a what should have been a sure bet for Democrats into a close fight.

The midterms also featured some potentially historic candidates, including Stacey Abrams, who would be the first black woman to be governor of Georgia if she won.

Aides set up televisions in the White House residence for Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their guests to watch election results come in, with the sets tuned to different cable news channels.

The election served as a referendum of sorts on Trump's racially charged appeals and the strength of the coalition that powered him to the White House - a group he will need again in just two years.

It could have been a much bigger night for Democrats, who suffered stinging losses in OH and in Florida, where Trump-backed Republican Ron DeSantis ended Democrat Andrew Gillum's bid to become the state's first African-American governor.

He decried, as he often has for months, special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into Trump 2016 campaign links to Russian Federation and whether Trump, as president, obstructed justice by trying to thwart the investigation.

The triple-killing saw Bruns indicted by a grand jury on charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault. The 44-year-old had a seizure when she stopped at a red light before the fatal crash, according to authorities.

Trump also said he hopes he can work with Congress to get enough money to build the wall but that he would not necessarily force a government shutdown over the issue. That could help Democrats because younger voters tend to lean their way.

The president told reporters at the White House that he won despite historic odds. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

Second, in the wake of their House victory, Democrats are likely to be more confrontational and subject Trump to more scrutiny. "They ignored the party bosses who said they should wait their turn".

Democrats have expressed confidence that they'll score the net gain of 23 seats needed to take control of the House for the first time since 2010.

He had some kind words for Pelosi, who with her party capturing the majority of seats Tuesday stands to become the next Speaker of the House. "It's about restoring the constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration", Pelosi said.

Almost 40 per cent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, the national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

The Republican side of the aisle elected mostly white men. Like other Democrats across the country, Spanberger emphasized protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage or charged more by insurers.

Who are the new faces in Congress?

Trump and Republicans appeared to have the economy on their side heading into the election: Unemployment in October held at a 48-year low of 3.7 percent.

Fernando Rivera, a 53-year-old small-business owner in Miami, said he voted for all Republicans because he wants Congress to support Trump and his economic policies. More women than ever were running, along with veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by revulsion over Trump.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Trump said his tax returns were already under audit and therefore he would not release them.

He deployed more than 5,000 troops to the border and suggested he may triple that number.
