Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

BREAKING Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at President Trump’s request

Sessions began his resignation letter to President Trump by stating he was submitting the resignation at Trump's request.

Trump said in a tweet that Matthew Whitaker, Sessions's chief of staff, had been appointed acting attorney general and that a permanent replacement would be nominated later. Previously he was a conservative legal commentator who was critical of the scope of Mueller's probe. "It would create a constitutional crisis if this were a prelude to ending or greatly limiting the Mueller investigation". "I don't have an attorney-general", he said in September. It is not clear whether Mueller was told ahead of time.

Sessions had been under attack from Trump for more than a year, and has been rumored to be on the president's chopping block for some time now.

So Jeff Sessions is gone. "Why not use Justice Department lawyers?" he wrote February 28, adding of the former GOP senator's judgment: "DISGRACEFUL!"

That investigation threw an early wrench into Trump's relationship with Sessions, who had been Trump's earliest presidential supporter in the Senate.

His departure sent shock waves through Washington, with the Justice Department still overseeing the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into the 2016 election, Russian meddling and Trump campaign activities.

The US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, said he was resigning Wednesday at the request of President Donald Trump in a move that raises questions over the future of a bombshell probe into the president's alleged collusion with Russian Federation.

He had qualified 23rd for his 600th start with Chad Knaus as his crew chief. His team made an engine change in the No. 78 Toyota after practice.

What might happen next could be explosive. Sessions has many Republican friends in the Senate.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, effectively firing him. "How do you take a job and then recuse yourself?"

"It's extremely unfair - and that's a mild word - to the president", Trump said.

Trump and Sessions have clashed since the 2017 inauguration.

The rift lingered for the duration of Sessions' tenure, and the attorney general, despite praising the president's agenda and hewing to his priorities, never managed to return to Trump's good graces.

Whitaker has run twice for elected state office in the past, once unsuccessfully as State Treasurer for Iowa in 2002 and once successfully as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, from 2004 to 2009. "As our country's top law enforcement official, he has been integral in fighting the opioid epidemic, keeping violent criminals off our streets, and supporting victims". He had represented Alabama in the chamber since 1997.
