Gillum, DeSantis cast votes in Florida's midterm election

Grammy-winning singer Rihanna is all in for Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum receiving the last-minute support needed to help him become Florida governor. In an interview with DeSantis following his win in the primary, the former Florida Representative warned voters not to "monkey this up" by voting for Gillum in his bid to become the state's first African-American governor.

Gillum, who leads by more than four percentage points in a polling average, said a victory by him would "send a message" to President Trump and to rival Ron DeSantis after a bitter race.

DeSantis might not have even made it to the general election without Trump's very early endorsement.

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary.

Trump was heavily invested in the race, making two visits to the state in the final week of the campaign.

Trump won the state by a slim margin - 1.2% of the popular vote - in 2016.

DeSantis argued throughout the campaign that Florida's relationship with the president - whether he or she agrees with his policies or not- is important for the state. The same report indicated Trump was losing his grip on independent voters, too.

Ocasio-Cortez to be youngest woman ever elected to Congress
She got her start in politics as an organiser for US Senator Bernie Sanders. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in June's Democratic primary.

Gillum had based his campaign around progressive issues. For Floridians, he supported expanded Medicaid coverage, an increased starting salary for teachers and and more stringent gun control measures, such as bans on assault weapons and limits on the size of magazines.

During his five years as a member of Congress, DeSantis sponsored 40 bills, including one to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and he was a member of the Freedom Caucus alongside some of the House's most conservative Republicans.

The governor-elect said he will "fight the good fight" and hopes to work with people on both sides of the aisle no matter who they supported.

"Other than serving in the military, becoming the 46th governor of the great state of Florida is the greatest professional honor of my life", DeSantis said. Fortunately for DeSantis, that strategy paid off.

The outgoing governor, Rick Scott, was term limited.

Gillum wasn't immune to scandals. DeSantis hammered Gillum's ethics and honesty, questioning whether he has been telling the truth about his role in the ongoing FBI investigation.

Gillum claimed he thought the ticket came from his younger brother, and acknowledged that he "should have asked more questions". He received criticism for speaking at a conference hosted by a white nationalist, chose not to return money from a donor who used a racial slur against Obama and was reportedly a moderator for a Facebook page full of racially insensitive memes. "I still plan to be on the front lines alongside every one of you when it comes to standing up and fighting for what we believe in". From the environment to crime to race relations, Gillum kept the people of Florida first and never went below the belt.
