Flawed election in greatest country gets underway with Trump tactics on line

Youth turnout could hold the key in the US mid terms and threaten Trump's hold on Congress

President Donald Trump touted some of his accomplishments regarding the economy and other topics in a new opinion piece published ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections.

He said the nation will find out whether the huge early voting has been "made up of people just so ticked off that Trump won, ticked off that they haven't been able to get rid of Trump, ticked off that we have not officially sanctioned ourselves as socialists".

Some 35 Senate seats were in play, as were nearly 40 governorships and the balance of power in virtually every state legislature.

Polling stations opened at 06:00 (11:00 GMT) on the East Coast, as Republicans and Democrats battle for control of the two houses of Congress.

Republicans automatically retain control of at least 42 of their Senate seats that are not up for election this year, so it will be hard but not impossible, for Democrats to win the majority.

If you plan to stay up late tonight to follow the midterm elections in the United States, here are some interesting races to watch.

Republicans are counting on Trump to rally his supporters in the closing hours to help maintain their narrow 51-to-49 seat edge in the Senate. In early voting in Florida, for instance, 40.1 per cent who voted early were registered Republicans, and 40.5 per cent registered Democrats, said media reports.

Democrats are trying to hold 10 Senate seats in states where Trump prevailed in the 2016 election, including Tennessee. But Trump appears to have put his finger on a very contentious spot in the American mind-space: people are anxious that the liberalism of the Democrats may work completely against the interests of those already living in the country.

"Win, win, win!": President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally.

"Democrats want to invite caravan after caravan of illegal aliens to pour into our country".

"I would say tone".

Democrats feel increasingly optimistic about their chances of taking back control of the House.

Hillary Clinton urged her 23.6 million followers on Twitter to get out and vote. Politico congressional reporter Rachael Bade joined CNN's Early Start on Monday to break it down. "When you vote, Illinois, you can choose hope over fear", he said. She said she used to vote for candidates from both major parties, but vowed never to support a Democrat because she was so upset by how new Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was treated in his confirmation process.

In 2014, 44 percent of no party affiliation voters and 56 percent of third party voters cast ballots. Now 235 are held by the Republicans and 193 by the Democrats with seven vacancies due to deaths. Maybe back in '16 during the presidential, right around the vote.

Tuesday's elections also tested the strength of a Trump-era political realignment defined by evolving divisions among voters by race, gender, and especially education.

"The big picture is that midterm elections go against the president's party", noted John Fortier of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington.

"I think they will be both miserable and emboldened", says Rove. "The Democrats will do quite well in the House of Representatives, in the governorships and state legislatures".

Facebook's purge is part of countermeasures to prevent abuses like those used by Russian groups two years ago to sway public opinion ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Those who believe in the dire message, particularly white conservative voters in the middle of the country often derided as flyover territory because it is so alienated from the more liberal, progressive, and economically vibrant coastal areas, are expected to vote Republican.

The Republican Party is expected to retain its majority in the Senate.

If the Democrats come up short they face another cycle shut out of power.

Instead of trumpeting the GOP's $1.5 trillion tax cuts, the debate was dominated by Trump's dire prediction of "invasion" from the migrant caravan and what he called the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.
