Cross Counter wins 2018 Melbourne Cup Flemington

The Cliffsofmoher euthanased on track after Melbourne Cup

The Godolphin stable, owned by uber-wealthy Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed, finally broke their Melbourne Cup drought.

Bowman rode Cheval Grand to victory in last year's Japan Cup, but he will be forced to sit it out this year if he can't successfully challenge the ban.

Regal Monarch, trained by Chris Waller, was euthanised after falling in race four a year ago, while British stayer Red Cadeaux was put down two weeks after falling and breaking a leg in the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

Unnoticed amid the tragedy of The Cliffsofmoher's death after the Melbourne Cup was how Ryan Moore handled the situation.

TAB revealed that on Monday morning, a racing fan - seemingly very content with their selection - laid down $50,000 on Cross Counter to win at $10 for a potential payout of $500,000.

That was despite the English-trained four-year-old - a three-year-old by northern hemisphere time - suffering a major setback with a cut to the leg just over three weeks ago.

Admire Rakti was a Japanese racehorse who collapsed and died from cardiac arrest at the Melbourne Cup in 2014.

Equine Veterinarians Australia spokesman Ian Fulton, who was in attendance at Flemington, said Moore's actions should be praised.

Burnett was eventually able to finish the round but could not make a go after it, forcing him to surrender his belt. Tete outpointed Mikhail Aloyan in Russian Federation last month in a WBSS quarterfinal.

There were awful scenes as the horses passed the finishing post for the first of two laps when fancied worldwide The Cliffsofmoher broke down mid-race.

He first tried to win the Melbourne Cup back in 1988, and through the Godolphin royal blue colours since 1998.

Before the race, The Cliffsofmoher was "sweating up", which can sometimes be an indication a horse is in distress. Godolphin has won hundreds of Group I races around the world but before today had never won the big one in Australia, despite more than 20 attempts.

One of sport's greatest hoodoos is no more and the billion-dollar Sheikh, whose earliest memory was galloping through the desert on a white stallion with his father, can finally say he is a Melbourne Cup victor.

Appleby said the Melbourne Cup had been on his "bucket list for a long time". "He's the one that's given us the encouragement to take the chances in what we do", he said.

Two of his three Cup wins have come since that move.

"We'll be back with something (next year) I can assure you".
