Ghost train: Runaway locomotive derailed by mining company after 92km without driver

"The driver of a loaded ore train consisting of four locomotives and 268 wagons stopped at the 211km point", an ATSB website incident report read.

A runaway BHP Billiton train loaded with thousands of tonnes of iron ore travelled more than 90km across Western Australia without a driver before being deliberately derailed.

A driverless, 268-car iron ore train was derailed in Western Australia on Monday - but only after it traveled almost 60 miles without an engineer, officials said. The driver left his post to check up on one of the wagons, when suddenly the train took off without him and drove towards Port Hedland.

The ATSB, which is also investigating the incident, said the damage to the train was substantial.

A BHP spokeswoman told The West Australian no one was injured and authorities are investigating'.

The company said the driver was inspecting an issue with the train when the locomotive ran away.

On Monday, the world's biggest miner suspended all Western Australian iron ore rail operations while an investigation was under way, the Australian newspaper reported, without citing a source.

The train travelled 92km until it was deliberately derailed by a control centre 119km from Port Headland about 5.05am, the ATSB site reported.
