AT&T successfully tests first 5G hotspot you'll actually be able to buy

Last month at Mobile World Congress Americas (MWCA), AT&T CTO Andre Fuetsch told ZDNet his carrier did not want to "waste time or effort" on the deployment of non-standardized, fixed 5G.

Yesterday, in Waco, TX, AT&T conducted what appears to be the world's first millimeter wave mobile 5G browsing session with a standards-based device.

"We really wanted to go after a global standard that the entire industry could align around. the differentiation really here is we're mobile 5G, all standards based, we're not about fixed 5G or non-standard", he said.

AT&T's Mobility and Entertainment president, David Christopher, describes the first 5G browsing session as a "seminal moment" and says that the use of the commercial device over AT&T's 5G network "proves we are well on our way to the promise of mobile 5G for consumers".

The Netgear Nighthawk 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem.

People across the country are using LTE 4G networks today, but soon those networks will be replaced with faster networks using 5G technology. According to the carrier's announcement, this was achieved on a Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot. The fact that AT&T's successful test in Waco, Texas, this week was conducted using production-ready hardware means that 5G's arrival isn't merely closer than its ever been before; it's practically at our doorstep.

AT&T has promised to launch mobile 5G services on the 3GPP's specification in a dozen cities by the end of this year. That's big news, as millimeter waves can provide download speeds of up to 5Gbps, which will change the way that we interact with devices. For 2018, cities like Charlotte, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta, and Louisville are a part of the list.
