Magnitude 6.8 quake shakes off Canada’s west coast

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 10:39 pm and had a shallow epicenter of 10 km located about 218 km southwest of Port Hardy.

Three relatively strong earthquakes were recorded Sunday night in the Pacific Ocean off Vancouver Island.

The earthquakes hit the Canadian province of British Columbia, near Vancouver Island.

The 6.8-magnitude quake is believed to have struck just under 200 kilometres west of Port Alice.

The first quake, reported as magnitude 6.5, was followed by another, of magnitude 6.8, around 40 minutes later.

Earthquakes Canada also reported a magnitude-4.4 aftershock from the first quake before midnight.

There are now no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the quakes and no tsunami warning has been issued.

The National Tsunami Warning Center tweeted that a tsunami is "not expected".

Multiple #earthquakes felt in parts of #BC, but no reports of damage or injury.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone has produced magnitude 9.0 or greater earthquakes in the past, and undoubtedly will in the future.
