Canadian postal worker strike begins in Windsor

Canada Post employees, citing concern that a prolonged strike could chew into their profits ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.

He explains smaller businesses rely on Canada Post for shipping goods, sending invoices, and receiving payments, and worries about the possible impact this strike action will have.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) filed a strike notice earlier this week after ten months of negotiations to renew collective agreements.

CUPW said their key demands are job security, better health and safety measures, more equality for mail carriers, and less overburdening and forced overtime.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which in Quebec is affiliated with the FTQ, has some 50,000 members in Canada, including 42,000 in urban areas, and 8,000 in remote sectors.

The strike plan is contingent on if the union and Canada Post are unable to reach an agreement by midnight tonight.

35 lives, $1.3 billion in timber lost to Michael
Only emergency room services are available at Bay Medical Sacred Heart and Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center. Medical services in the Florida Panhandle are still on life support more than a week after Hurricane Michael.

However, Canada Post will continue to accept and deliver mails and parcels in all other locations nationwide.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is also urging Canada Post to rein in spending to reduce costs.

CUPW members were set to walk picket lines in front of Windsor post offices.

While many Canadians have found other ways to deliver letters and pay bills, over half of small businesses still pay each other by paper cheques sent through the mail, the CFIB said Monday, noting that nearly two-thirds of firms reported sending more than 20 pieces of mail per month.

"There's nothing moving in Edmonton at all", she said. The union says they're committed to continuing delivery of pension and social assistance checks, as it has done in the past.
