Numbers Decline, Migrants Cross the Mexico-Guatemala Border

Here’s what happened to the size of the Honduran migrant caravan after Trump’s threat

Mexico has said that anyone without proper papers would be deported but didn't appear to be enforcing that law.

The caravan of mostly Honduran nationals stopped before the Mexico-Guatemala border Friday morning and temporarily retreated, The Associated Press reported.

Organizers of a caravan of migrants trying to cross into Mexico and ultimately the US appear intent on avoiding a repeat of a rush on the border with Guatemala that ended when Mexican security forces with riot shields and pepper spray drove them back. But he was also sympathetic to the challenges noting that four Mexican policemen were injured during what he described as an organized effort to "violate the sovereignty of Mexico".

Adding to pressure on Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Mexico City to discuss bilateral issues Friday with his Mexican counterparts.

Pompeo said he had a "good conversation" with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and that the two countries are jointly focused on the caravan issue, but "the Mexican government is making all the decisions on how to address this". But the official did not say when this would happen.

The crowd then rushed across a long bridge that crosses the Suchiate River and connects Ciudad Tecún Umán with the Mexican town of Ciudad Hidalgo, coming to a stop at a high metal fence blocking the way into Mexico. Dozens of Mexican federal police officers are on the border bridge, with hundreds more behind them.

As dusk neared, police were relieved by fresh officers and reformed ranks.

Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala says his country has chose to enforce a policy of "metered entry" since thousands of migrants are clamoring to cross.

When the crowd calmed, authorities began allowing people to pass over the border.

Trump has made curbing illegal immigration a keystone of his presidency.

The re-emergence of immigration as a pressing concern in the USA comes in the middle of heated midterm elections, and Mr. Trump has featured the issue in political rallies held around the country on behalf of Republican congressional candidates.

The women and children are part of a group of thousands of Honduran migrants on the Mexican border with Guatemala hoping to reach the United States. In April, several hundred made it to the USA border near San Diego, and a limited number were allowed to apply for asylum in the U.S.

The fight for social equality means opening up the borders to allow the most exploited and oppressed to travel the planet as they please without fear of deportation or harassment. God is going to soften Trump's hard heart.

"So as of this moment, I thank Mexico".

The migrants who remained told CNN they joined the caravan because they had no other choice, noting that they were desperate for work. We're calling up the military. He should be happy because we're going to work. "They came in droves from Guatemala and Honduras through the Mexican border and for years Uncle Sam rolled out the welcome mat offering housing, food, medical treatment and a free education".

Erika Guevara-Rosas of Amnesty International said in a statement: "These families deserve dignity and respect to ensure that no-one is illegally returned to situations where they could risk serious harm due to violence". Earlier this year, during a previous migrant caravan, the country ultimately registered the migrants and gave them permits of up to 30 days to leave the country or apply for asylum.
