Assange sues Ecuador for violating 'fundamental rights'

Speculation is mounting that Ecuador is preparing to end its standoff with the British government by terminating Wikileaks founder Julian Assange's high-profile stay at its embassy

The rules violate Assange's constitutional rights and need to be clarified by Ecuador's courts, Baltasar Garzon, a former Spanish judge, told reporters in Quito on Friday.

In a statement, WikiLeaks accused Ecuador of "violating" Assange's "fundamental rights and freedoms".

Assange has been living in Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012 when Swedish prosecutors filed rape charges against him.

It said Ecuador's government had refused to allow a visit by Human Rights Watch's general counsel Dinah PoKempner and stopped several meetings with Assange's lawyers.

"Ecuador's measures against Julian Assange have been widely condemned by the human rights community", it added.

The protocol also requires journalists, lawyers and anyone else seeking to see Assange to disclose their private or political details, such as social media usernames and the serial numbers and codes of their phones and tablets, with Ecuador - which the protocol says the government may "share with other agencies". The protocol makes Assange's political asylum contingent on censoring his freedom of opinion, speech and association. Ecuadorean authorities cut his communications with the outside world and began raising the topic of evicting Assange from the embassy in 2018.

The website reported that the embassy intends to stop paying for Assange's food and medical care in December.

Newly released Ecuadorian government documents have laid bare an unorthodox attempt to extricate the WikiLeaks founder from his embassy hideaway by naming him as a political counsellor to the country's embassy in Moscow.

However, earlier this week it said it would be partially restored. The lawyer also said during a press conference that there are now no plans to take Assange to Russian Federation.

Julian Assange remains inside the Ecuadorian embassy.

Pressure has mounted on Ecuador to hand Assange over to the United Kingdom, especially since Mike Pence's visit in June in which Moreno and Pence "agreed to remain in close coordination" in relation to Mr. Assange, according to the White House [https://twitter.com/TimJohnson4/status/1012405586254852096].

Assange sought refuge at the Ecuador Embassy in Knightsbridge in June 2012, having lost an appeal against extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of rape and sexual assault that went to the Supreme Court.
