Apple's Tim Cook calls on 'Bloomberg' to retract Chinese spyware story

GettyApple CEO Tim Cook

In an interview with BuzzFeed News published Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook called on Bloomberg to retract a contentious investigative report that found that Chinese spies used microchips to infiltrate several major United States tech companies.

Perhaps this is the first time Apple has reacted to a news article published on any publication, where it had to publish a public statement and a letter to Congress signed by Apple's vice president of information security, George Stathakopoulos.

Bloomberg Businessweek in its October story alleged that data center hardware used by Apple and Amazon Web Services, provided by server company Super Micro, was under surveillance by the Chinese government.

Blasting Jordan Robertson and Michael Riley's reporting on the Chinese spy chip story, Apple's CEO calls for a retraction.

Fitzpatrick said the image Bloomberg Businessweek provided of the supposed spy chip was the exact coupler he found on internet and sent to the reporter.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken the unusual step of going on the record to deny a news story, and is further asking the news agency that published it for a retraction. We have repeatedly and consistently offered factual responses, on the record, refuting virtually every aspect of Bloomberg's story relating to Apple. He added: "I personally talked to the Bloomberg reporters".

Angry mob pelts stones at police at site of Indian rail accident
He also defended his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was accused of leaving the accident site without bothering about the victims. The protesters also demanded against authorities for allowing the Dussehra celebrations near the rail tracks.

In response to questions from Bloomberg, "We turned the company upside down", Cook told BuzzFeed. Each time they brought this up to us, the story changed, and each time we investigated we found nothing ...

Apple didn't immediately reply to Fortune's request for comment. Not only was the Bloomberg report curiously spotty with respect to how the attack actually operated, one of the story's main sources claims that the story Bloomberg ultimately ran with didn't make any sense.

Meanwhile, an official from the US Department of Homeland Security has said he has no reason to doubt the Apple and Amazon denials, and a top official with the National Security Agency has said the vast resources at his disposal have been unable to confirm the report. The report claims the chips were discovered in 2015 during testing by a third-party security company, that supposedly triggering a top secret investigation said to be ongoing.

They claim that Apple has never found malicious chips or hardware manipulations on its servers.

An Apple spokesman said Friday that the company would have no additional comment.

The report has also drawn criticism from U.S. intel chiefs.
