Mystery of Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance: Story so far

So, the police believed that Hackage killed, and the body was taken from the Consulate.

Graham's comments came after CNN reported on Monday evening that Saudi officials were preparing to release a potential statement acknowledging that Khashoggi had been killed in the consulate, despite initially denying involvement and claiming without evidence that Khashoggi had left the building unharmed.

Turkish forensic investigators searched the consulate overnight. Reports have alleged that Khashoggi was killed by a hit squad after entering the Saudi consulate in Instanbul, Turkey, earlier this month, according to anonymous Turkish officials.

Pompeo's trip to hear both sides of the Khashoggi case - Saudi denials in Riyadh and Turkish accusations in Ankara - did not appear to offer any deeper clarity into how the Trump administration is dealing with the conflicting accounts from two major allies. Certain areas of the consulate were to remain off-limits, although officials would be able to inspect surveillance cameras, Turkish media reported.

Earlier this week Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the Turkish President over the disappearance of the Saudi Journalist.

Before leaving Riyadh, Pompeo told reporters that Saudi officials pledged they would hold any wrongdoers accountable, no matter how high their positions.

On Monday, Trump tweeted that he was sending Pompeo to meet with King Salman in an effort to "find an answer".

Khashoggi, who wrote for The Washington Post and resided in Virginia, has been missing since he visited the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October 2.

According to that narrative, the crown prince had approved an interrogation or rendition of Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, but the intelligence official was tragically incompetent as he eagerly sought to prove himself.

Members of Mr Khashoggi's family have called for "an independent and impartial international" investigation.

Khashoggi has written extensively for the Washington Post about Saudi Arabia, criticising its war in Yemen, the recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a driving ban for women.

Pressure is growing on Saudi Arabia to give a full explanation of what happened to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Pompeo "also thanked the King for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation of Khashoggi's disappearance", the statement read.

Khashoggi has been missing since last Tuesday when he entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey to obtain paperwork so he can remarry.

The incident has sparked a major diplomatic crisis between the USA and Saudi Arabia.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for talks with King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

On Monday, a team of Turkish investigators and forensics experts entered the consulate 13 days after the prominent Saudi journalist was last seen walking into the building.

The telephonic talks between Trump and King Salman is being seen as an attempt by the Saudi ruler to defuse tension apparently caused by the 33-year-old Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Before sending Pompeo to Saudi Arabia, US President Donald Trump spoke to King Salman over phone.

"Nothing happens in Saudi Arabia without MBS knowing it".

Reports overnight by USA media suggest Saudi Arabia soon may concede Khashoggi was killed at the consulate in an interrogation.
