Trump threatens to send troops to border to stop migrant caravan

Haitian migrants seeking asylum in the United States queue at El Chaparral border crossing in the hope of getting an appointment with US migration authorities in the Mexican border city of Tijuana in Baja California

In the wake of yet another attack by President Donald Trump on immigration as a vehicle for drugs and crime, Fox News' Lisa Montgomery Kennedy proposed an extreme obstacle course at the border to keep out those she felt are undesirable.

United States President Donald Trump is threatening to deploy the military and close the country's southern border as more Hondurans and Salvadorans join thousands of migrants in Guatemala heading north.

President Donald Trump threatened today to scrap a crucial trade deal and send soldiers to close the USA southern border in response to a large caravan of Central American immigrants now heading toward the United States.

El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala all suffer from widespread poverty and high rates of violent crime; their murder rates are some of the highest in the world.

And, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to travel to Mexico to forge plans to stop the caravan.

Trump also vowed to stop aid to Central American countries if a large number of migrants - or as the president called it, an "onslaught" - from Honduras is not stopped before they reach the US.

Trump has made migrant caravans a symbol of all that is wrong with US immigration policies.

"Republicans must make the horrendous, weak and outdated immigration laws, and the Border, a part of the Midterms!" he said.

The Mexican government has said it intends to deport people who enter the country illegally, though they have the right to apply for asylum, and sent 500 federal policy to its border with Guatemala to prepare for the group's arrival, NBC News reported. The trafficking networks are controlled by drug cartels and use drug-smuggling routes to help the migrants cross the US border illegally.

Trump's frustration appears to stem in part from record levels of immigrant parents entering the United States with children in the three months since his administration ended family separations at the border.

"We hope that in this big caravan group, they let us in", he added, referring to the US.

Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who takes office in December, said on Thursday that he believed an agreement could be reached on the migration issue.

The migrant caravan is now in Tapachula, Guatemala and is on its way to the Mexican-USA Border.

The Honduran migrants, trekking in a caravan toward Mexico's southern border, say they're headed for the United States in an effort to flee violence and search for economic opportunity.

But Marcelo Ebrard, who has been picked as Mexico's next foreign minister, downplayed the comments and said Trump was appealing to his domestic political base. And states like Guatemala and Mexico passing the buck to the United States doesn't constitute a "best endeavor" to determine who is a genuine refugee.
