State Dept Denies Claims Pompeo Heard Audio Related to Khashoggi Disappearance

Donald Trump

That puts Silicon Valley in a sensitive position in responding to Khashoggi's disappearance.

Turkish police believe Mr Khashoggi's killers may have dumped his remains in Belgrad Forest, next to Istanbul, and near the rural city of Yalova, 90 kilometres (55 miles) away from the Turkish capital, senior officials have said.

"The secretary addressed this yesterday". According to a Turkish daily newspaper, which claimed it had obtained tapes from the consulate, Khashoggi was tortured and had his fingers cut off during interrogation and then decapitated.

Yesterday, on his way back from Istanbul, Pompeo was asked if he had heard the audio.

"I don't have anything to say about that", he said.

Mr Mnuchin announced he would pull out of the summit, following a discussion with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

In this December 15, 2014 file photo, Jamal Khashoggi, then general manager of a new Arabic news channel speaks during a press conference, in Manama, Bahrain.

It is unknown whether Pompeo shared the transcript with the president, but soon after the meeting the president changed his tune.

Turkish reports say Khashoggi, who had written columns critical of the Saudi government for The Washington Post over the past year while he lived in self-imposed exile in the US, was killed and dismembered inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul by members of an assassination squad with ties to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"No not at all, I just want to find out what's happening", Trump told reporters in the White House when asked if his consistently cautious approach to the scandal amounts to a cover-up.

Meanwhile several lawmakers led by Congressman Jim McGovern introduced a legislation in the House to prohibit all U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia until Secretary of State determines that the Saudi regime is not responsible for the disappearance or death of Khashoggi. "It's bad, bad stuff".

Meghan Markle gets a fright in Melbourne on royal tour of Australia
Yesterday, Melbourne was taken over by Royal fever as the Duke & Duchess of Sussex touched down for a whirlwind tour of the city. Cue puff of smoke and - much to Harry's amusement - a giggly yelp not unlike Julia Roberts's jewelry box moment in Pretty Woman .

Details of the attack on Khashoggi have started to emerge based on recordings allegedly obtained by Turkish authorities from inside the consulate, including of a Saudi autopsy doctor reportedly telling others to listen to music to ease the tension as they dismembered the body.

US President Donald Trump has criticised the mounting global condemnation of Saudi Arabia over Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance, and compared it to the allegations of sexual assault leveled against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

A Turkish forensic police officer searches for evidence at the Saudi Arabian consulate on October 17, 2018 in Istanbul.

U.S. lawmakers from both parties have expressed outrage over Khashoggi's disappearance and reports of his murder and have been calling for consequences, including possible sanctions against Saudi Arabia.

A close friend of Khashoggi, Turan Kislakci, told ABC News in an interview on Wednesday that Turkish government and security officials had told him that Khashoggi was dead.

Meanwhile, Turkish media say they have identified a 15-member team of suspected Saudi agents who flew into and out of Istanbul on the day of the disappearance. "We will probably know that by the end of the week", Trump said.

But the issue of Khashoggi's fate is "gathering momentum", Charbonneau said, "and we hope that the momentum will be such that Turkey will not be able to say no, and will actually have to step forward ... and that the Saudis will be under so much pressure that they will have to cooperate" with a United Nations investigation.

Khashoggi went to the consulate seeking documents for his planned marriage and has not been seen since. Khashoggi refused, and was killed. "You are going to get me in trouble". "Unfortunately, this kind of news which related with his killing in a barbaric way is coming out".

Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey two weeks ago. He was visiting the consulate to file paperwork for his upcoming wedding, and his fiancee waited for him in a auto outside the consulate.

In his column, Khashoggi criticized the worldwide community for ignoring the ongoing abuses by governments in the Middle East.
