Saudi Arabia $100 million to USA as missing journalist mystery deepens

File Journalists wait in front of Saudi Arabia's Consulate building

The controversy has blown a hole in Prince Mohammed's bid to promote himself as the modern face of Saudi Arabia and led to a spate of cancelations by attendees at a major Riyadh investment conference scheduled next week.

"If you want to live when you come to Saudi Arabia, be quiet!" he said.

"No not at all, I just want to find out what's happening", Trump told reporters.

"It is 500,000 jobs, it will be ultimately $110 billion".

"When we arrived at the consulate, he went right in".

"So hopefully it is working out".

The source did not describe how the crown prince or the Saudis reacted, but said the message had been received. "That is a big factor in my eyes, and I hope they haven't".

Trump said the United States has asked Turkey for audio and video it may have related to Khashoggi's disappearance after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Trump has resisted any action, pointing to huge USA weapons deals pending with Saudi Arabia and saying that sanctions could hurt end up hurting the American economy.

"We have managed and are continuing to manage this issue transparently and open to the world within the measures given by law", he said.

"I. could go on about places where the Saudis and the Americans are working together", the top US diplomat said.

"Our foreign policy", he says, "has to serve our interest, which is to say the safety, security, and wellbeing of Americans".

Asked about the recording, as reported by the Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak, Trump said, "We've asked for it, if it exists".

"There's always something that we want from them and that they want from us, and that's why the relationship survives".

Turkish officials have said they believe Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was murdered at the Saudi consulate and his body removed. President Trump has requested audio and video from Turkish officials in connection to Khashoggi's disappearance.

USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo met King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Wednesday.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman meets with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis at the Pentagon in Washington, on March 22, 2018. They promised that they would achieve that, and I'm counting on it, and they gave me their word. We got it, and we got all of it, every bit of it.

Khashoggi, a former regime insider who became critical of Prince Mohammed, has not been seen since he stepped inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to sort out marriage paperwork.

Turkish authorities say several of the men who killed Khashoggi were top Saudi officials and diplomats close to the crown prince.

At no stage has there been a public presentation of evidence by the police.

After he was shown into the office of the Saudi consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, the agents seized Khashoggi nearly immediately and began to beat and torture him, eventually cutting off his fingers, the senior Turkish official said. The Saudi envoy left Istanbul for Riyadh on Tuesday.

Mr Trump said he was waiting for a full report on Mr Khashoggi's disappearance from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo when he returns from his trip to Saudi Arabia and Turkey, where Mr Pompeo met with leaders to discuss reports Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
