Labor moves to make medical transfers from Nauru easier

Labor moves to make medical transfers from Nauru easier

"I just need to be free, going to Australia is not my concern anymore", said Arash, an Iranian refugee living on Nauru with his family.

As of last week, 418 people had resettled in the United States from both Manus Island and Nauru, under the deal struck by former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and former United States president Barack Obama.

The deportation of the Australian doctor also follows Medecins Sans Frontieres calling for urgent evacuations from the island, and sharing emotional and detailed analysis the mental health conditions of the asylum seekers and refugees on the island. About 1500 people are being held hostage on Nauru and Manus Island by the Australian government.

An International Health and Medical Services spokesperson says the officer breached the rules of the detention centre in Nauru.

"These are practical, reasonable and responsible measures to address the chaotic, confusing and inconsistent medical transfer process that now exists for asylum seeker and refugee children", Mr Neumann said.

The Department of Home Affairs said it was a matter for IHMS and the government of Nauru, but stressed there had been no interruption to medical care.

Also this week, three Liberal MPs, including Julia Banks, have demanded Australia move to evacuate children and their families. MSF has then released a statement, saying it "strongly condemned" the Nauru's government for stopping its doctors from giving much-needed medical and mental health care.

Scott Morrison is under pressure to remove sick children from Nauru.

Shaw signs bumper new contract with Manchester United
Shaw has been rewarded for an excellent start to the season personally despite a hard time for Mourinho's men as a team. But while Chelsea's fortunes appear to be on the rise, it's been a different story for Manchester United this season.

"Over the past 11 months on Nauru, I have seen an alarming number of suicide attempts and incidents of self-harm among the refugee and asylum seeker men, women and children we treat".

He said Labor and the crossbench had refused to support the necessary legislation.

Australian Medical Association representative Dr Paul Bauert, who delivered the letter to Mr Morrison, has congratulated the outspoken Liberal MPs.

She insisted the government hadn't only become open to the plan after political pressure from its own ranks or ahead of the Wentworth by-election.

Legislation issuing the lifelong ban of travelling to Australia has been stuck in parliament since 2016.

Labor has hit back arguing the ban didn't need to be in place for the Turnbull Government to make a deal with the USA to accept refugees.

The shadow cabinet resolved on Monday night to draft a private member's bill overhauling current processes to make the health of children the primary consideration when determining a temporary medical transfer from offshore detention.

Morrison is now willing to accept New Zealand's offer to resettle 80 asylum seekers from Nauru, but on one strict condition: The refugees must never step foot in Australia ever. "We certainly will not be supporting a bill along these lines", Centre Alliance senator Stirling Griff told Fairfax Media.
