Facebook concedes that Portal device data can inform targeted ads elsewhere

One of the largest Social networking giant Facebook is going to develop a camera-equipped set-top box for TVs that would also going to support functionalities which includes like video-calling, according to the media report said.

A Facebook spokesperson explained that Portal's voice calls are built on Messenger's infrastructure, and as such it collects the same information - such as call length and call frequency - as other Messenger-enabled devices. Facebook insisted during its Cambridge Analytica hearings that advertising is what allows its service to be free - not that you can pay for using an ad-free Facebook right now.

When Facebook unveiled its Portal and Portal+ video calling hardware last week, there were immediate concerns voiced about the privacy implications of the social network's new devices. The company also admitted that other general usage data, such as how the users utilize their apps and much more other information could aid in the methods that the company uses to serve or present ads. Aside from making video calls, the Portals can display photos and play music and videos.

Facebook has recanted the claim made by an earlier report that Portal can not collect data to target users with ads on Facebook. While the Portal technology is undoubtedly clever, the fact that Facebook launched its devices while still in the midst of a privacy scandal that saw personal information of thousands of users exposed was seen as misguided at best, or tremendously arrogant by those less forgiving.

Public funds back plan to replace Mark Zuckerberg as Facebook chair
Contrafund manager Will Danoff was supportive of Facebook's response to problems in an investor note in August. Considering Zuckerberg's outsized influence on the company, the proposal is likely to go in vain.

This is hardly surprising given Facebook's ad-fuelled business model.

In the biggest-ever security breach after Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook admitted earlier this month that hackers broke into almost 50 million users' accounts by stealing their "access tokens" or digital keys.

Facebook has conceded for the first time that data gathered via its Portal video-chat gadget can be repurposed for targeted ads displayed elsewhere, just days after confirming 50m accounts have been compromised by hackers. That's because Facebook integrated Alexa into the Portal.
