Man Booker 2018: Four women, two men shortlisted for the prize

Daisy Johnson the Man Booker Prize's youngest shortlisted author and her book

Kushner's novel The Mars Room takes on gender, class and the American dream in a story of poverty and incarceration, while the National Book Award-winning Powers is nominated for The Overstory, about nine strangers trying to save a continent's last few virgin acres of virgin forest.

And this morning word comes of the Man Booker Short list-a list dominated by women writers.

Among the six shortlisted, three of them - Burns, Johnson and Robertson are from the United Kingdom, whereas two, Kushner and Powers, are from America.

His book, released this year, joins a list that includes two debut novels, including one for the youngest author to ever make the list, and a second showing for the Canadian writer Esi Edugyan.

United Kingdom author Daisy Johnson claims the distinction of being the youngest-ever nominee: the 27-year-old made this list with her debut novel Everything Under, taking the title from 2013 victor Eleanor Catton.

Robertson, long regarded as one of Scotland's leading poets, was also the editor of Michael Ondaatje's Warlight, which was longlisted this year.

Burn's Milkman is among six novels published this year that have qualified for the final shortlist as voted for by a six person panel.

The announcement was made by Chair of judges, Kwame Anthony Appiah, at a press conference at the offices of Man Group, the much-coveted prize's sponsor. "In each of them the language takes centre stage".

Two novels from independent publishers, are shortlisted, alongside three from Penguin Random House and one from Pan Macmillan imprint Picador.

A tale of slavery and history told through a fable-like lens, Edugyan's Washington Black has been described as a "ravishing" and sweeping novel which takes in everything from the plantations to Moroccan deserts.

All authors whose works were included in the shortlist, receive checks on 2,5 thousand pounds sterling and the right to reissue the novel-shortlisted in "bukerovskoj" design.

The victor of the 50,000 pound ($66,000) prize will be announced on October 16 during a black-tie dinner at London's Guildhall.

The victor will receive a further £50,000 and can expect instant worldwide recognition.
