Rain saves Svitolina in Hong Kong quarterfinals

China's Wang Qiang hits a return during her quarter-final women's singles match against Elina Svitolina at the Hong Kong Open tennis tournament on Oct 12 2018

The Ukrainian trailed Chinese No. 6 seed Qiang Wang 6-2, 5-2 when the quarterfinal was suspended by rain on Friday in China. She's yet to drop a set this week en route to the semifinals.

Wang could rise to a career-high ranking of 22 (from 24) with the title.

"But in the end (Wang) had the advantage, she had the confidence", Svitolina said.

"I felt like she had her A-game today", Gavrilova said.

In order to do that, she would need to play the Moscow tournament next week.

"I feel in the second set she was playing so much better - it was a full battle".

She could still qualify for the WTA Finals, but would have to request and be granted a wild card to play a tournament this coming week to secure a place in Singapore.

Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova recovered after dropping the first set to hold off Great Britain's Katie Boulter 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Tianjin, China.

Wang blamed fatigue for her flat performance after a frenetic summer and autumn which seen her claim two titles, a host of big name scalps and a gold medal at the Asian Games. She has said she is aiming to break into the top 20 in the new year.

Her subsequent match against No. 4 seed Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain was a different story as Wang needed almost three hours to pull off the 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5 comeback victory.

Yastremska reached her first career final after defeating 40th-ranked Zhang Shuai of China 7-5, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Zhang will be favourite to win against 18-year-old Yastremska, now ranked 102. "I want to repeat it all from the first match". "After match point I fell on the floor because I felt so relaxed, that was my instinct to go and lie because I needed to put it away, the emotions".

"I even started to cry a little bit".

Zhang, ranked 40th in the world, had shrugged off the loss of the first set despite leading 5-2 to race to a 3-0 lead in the second set, only to be hauled back by her opponent's blistering return of serve and shot-making skills.
