UN Says Canada Needs to Cut Emissions to Stop Catastrophic Climate Change

United Nations report says damages from climate change may occur within the next two decades.

Addressing the dialogue, Deputy Minister of MONRE Le Cong Thanh said that as one of the countries heavily impacted by climate change, Vietnam has actively implemented global commitments and made efforts to cope with climate change.

Many people will have taken note of the press statement in November, 2016 by the Minister of the Environment and Housing in the then PLP government in which he committed The Bahamas to taking action on climate change following our ratification of the Paris Agreement.

McCormack said the government won't change policy just because somebody might suggest that some sort of report is the way we need to follow and everything that we should do. "While time is short, there is still a chance of keeping to 1.5 degrees of warming".

Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Country Director for Vietnam, said the IPCC report noted that severe impacts of climate change could be avoidable by limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but time is running out.

The attack occurred at around 10:30am on Friday at Gan Gan, a remote community in the Northern Territory. The corporation have closed their office since they first reported the attack to NT WorkSafe.

He said that the European Union needs to increase its 2030 greenhouse gas emissions target to 45 per cent "to be in line with the IPCC's recommendations on 1.5°C pathways".

A report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) detailing progress and pathways to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius has said climate change has literally set the planet on fire, with millions of people in Africa already feeling the impacts of poverty.

The likelihood of an Arctic Ocean free of sea ice in summer would be once per century with global warming of 1.5°C, compared with at least once per decade with 2ºC. Coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, whereas virtually all (more than 99 percent) would be lost with the high warming cap.

She emphasized that the high-level dialogue is a unique and strategic opportunity to discuss opportunities to increase ambition and expedite transformation to achieve the Paris Agreement objective and Vietnam's climate change targets, in order to keep the impacts of climate change within manageable levels. UNDP is proud of providing technical support to this process together with GIZ and other development partners, she stressed.

Following the meeting in the RoK, Vietnam was chosen as the first country to be introduced to this special report. Clearly, in a country like The Bahamas with its abundant sunshine and offshore winds we should do all we can to develop our local renewable energy potential. Coal is also Australia's largest export, according to McCormack. Global net emissions of carbon dioxide would need to fall by 45 per cent from 2010 levels by 2030, and reach "net zero" around 2050.
