11-Year-Old Girl Killed by Windborne Carport Amid Hurricane Michael

S Hurricane Michael drenches Florida Panhandle

At least one person died after being hit by an uprooted tree.

Long told CNN Friday morning, "I expect the fatality count to climb today and tomorrow as we get through the debris, and I am very frustrated by that, because we seem to not learn this lesson in this country".

As Michael moves into the Atlantic, the days of misery are far from over in the coastal cities left devastated beyond recognition.

Mr. Long said he worries about "hurricane amnesia" and called for rebuilding to be done "in a resilient fashion".

Walls and windows were sucked out of a Holiday Inn in Panama City, where many evacuees were sheltered. Residents are walking through piles of debris, some assessing the damage and others trying to get out and find food. "5 suspected tornadoes", the Virginia Department of Emergency Management said on Twitter.

"When the water came in houses started floating", said the man identified as Scott. - Residential neighborhoods are lined with trees.

"The bottom line is there is a significant amount of damage in many of those areas", said Danny Kilcollins, infrastructure branch director for the state's emergency center.

Catastrophic scenes have emerged across the Florida Panhandle, but none perhaps worse than in Mexico Beach, described as ground zero of the devastation.

Early Friday morning, Michael was dropping rain along the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts as it moves eastward over the ocean, with sustained winds that have strengthened to 65 miles per hour.

Damage in Panama City near where Michael came ashore Wednesday afternoon was so extensive that broken and uprooted trees and downed power lines lay almost everywhere. One of the carport's legs punctured the roof and hit her in the head.

Authorities said the full extent of devastation would not be known until after daybreak in Florida on Thursday. She's desperate for news about the condition of her home, but she can't reach anyone, she says.

Rescuers searched for survivors on Friday after one of the most powerful hurricanes in U.S. history slammed into the Florida Panhandle before moving across Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, killing at least 11 people.

Hurricane Michael underwent three periods of rapid intensification, said Haiyan Jiang, associate professor of meteorology at Florida International University.

Thousands of people have been informally reported missing to local authorities, the Red Cross and the state, as people look for their friends and relatives.

Thousands of residents in the Florida Panhandle are slowly returning to their homes and discovering that everything or nearly everything they owned has been reduced to rubble.

Residents of Mexico Beach were forced to evacuate but state officials said 285 residents chose not to heed the mandatory evacuation order - leading the Florida National Guard to enter the area on Wednesday and rescue 20 survivors.

Linda Clarke gasped repeatedly at the sight of her once new home in Shell Point Beach - now severely damaged.

"You can't make sense of it, but what you do is you take the situation, and what we have to make certain that our kids know is that we must be resilient", Smith said. Much of that area has been dramatically documented already, but the map also shows the greater Panama City area. Despite the destruction, Rev. Luke Farabaugh and his congregation celebrated Mass on Thursday.

Brad Rippey, a meteorologist for the USA agriculture department, said Michael severely damaged cotton, timber, pecan and peanut crops, causing estimated liabilities as high as $1.9bn and affecting up to 3.7m crop acres (1.5m hectares).

"For North Carolina, Michael isn't as bad as Florence, but it adds unwelcome insult to injury, so we must be on alert", Gov. Roy Cooper said. "I've been telling people ... to have hope". "I just thank God my kids and my grandkids were not in the auto".

Michael left North Carolina and Virginia behind with rivers rising.

Damaged and destroyed buildings are seen in an aerial photograph, taken during a post-Hurricane Michael flight by a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter over Mexico Beach, Florida, U.S. October 11, 2018.
