Wildlife ranger killed by crocodile in northern Australia

The last fatal crocodile attack in Australia was October last year when a 79-year-old dementia patient was killed after wandering from a nursing home at Port Douglas in Queensland state.

Police found her body about 5pm less than a mile from the scene.

Earlier this morning a woman was reported missing from a remote community in East Arnhem Land with unconfirmed reports she may have been attacked by a crocodile.

Her body was recovered hours later less than 1 kilometre from where she was taken by the crocodile, Northern Territory Police Commander Tony Fuller said.

"NT WorkSafe has been notified that a female Aboriginal Ranger has been taken by a crocodile approximately 206km south west of Yirrkala", a statement from the government organisation read".

The crocodile was destroyed by local Indigenous rangers and the woman's body was recovered.

The incident occurred at about 10am Friday and is being investigated by NT WorkSafe.

A NT Police spokeswoman told news.com.au no further information was yet available.

A FEMALE Aboriginal Ranger has been taken by a crocodile in East Arnhem Land today, NT Worksafe has been notified.
