Senate confirms 15 more judges, wrapping up a GOP priority

Mitch Mc Connell Oct. 10

There are also some signs that Republican candidates are rallying around positions that are the opposite of their potential future Senate colleagues.

As a result, Democratic lawmakers seemed confident that a heightened focus on this issue can cement any advantages they already have in an election season where Republicans are facing an uphill battle, even if their strategists and party leaders are touting a boost from Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation as a Supreme Court justice.

Senate Democratic leaders defended the decision as an obvious one.

"Only one side was happy to play host to this toxic fringe behavior", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday in the latest GOP attack.

The Quinnipiac poll follows a Gallup survey that showed Republicans' enthusiasm five weeks before the midterm elections was rising fast, putting them neck and neck with Democrats, who held a big margin just weeks ago.

Both parties have detected a surge in engagement among GOP and conservative voters since the nation's attention was grabbed by the confirmation battle over Kavanaugh, including allegations of sexual misconduct that he denied. In a Quinnipiac University National Poll released October 2, 49 percent of voters said they support the Democratic candidate in their local race for the House of Representatives while 42 percent back the Republican candidate. McConnell has called it a political gift.

Polls have put her Republican opponent, Rep. Kevin Cramer, comfortably ahead.

Trump has a busy campaign schedule to spread the word that the allegations against Kavanaugh were a "hoax that was set up by the Democrats" at what he's called a unsafe time for men who can be falsely accused. In the first midterms after Obama was elected - and the first after the passage of Obamacare without a single GOP vote - Democrats got shellacked, losing 63 seats in the House of Representatives, the largest seat change since 1948 and the largest for any midterm election since 1938. They want to keep their 401ks...

Democrats say Trump's rhetoric since launching his 2016 campaign has been provocative, pugnacious and at times racist.

The Democratic candidate 45 percent.

"Yesterday they were talking about impeaching Judge Kavanaugh", said Trump expressing shock over the talk.

McConnell described protesters "literally storming the steps of the Capitol and the Supreme Court", confronting Republicans at restaurants and shouting from the Senate visitors' galleries during last week's debate and vote on Kavanaugh.

For another, although the confirmation hearings drew significant attention, it's far less clear whether the Supreme Court showdown will be enough of a priority to motivate voters who'd otherwise stay home or move the needle in any other way. In Missouri, for instance, Republican Senate candidate, Attorney General Josh Hawley, who is among the group of attorneys general suing to invalidate the Affordable Care Act, ran an advertisement saying he supported forcing insurance companies to include coverage for preexisting conditions.

"I really think they have it naturally", said Trump.

James Hodgkinson, who was killed at the scene by officers, was infuriated by President Donald Trump's election, his widow has said.
