NY man built 200-pound bomb to detonate on Election Day

Man charged over US mid-term elections 'bomb plot'

Federal officials have charged a NY man with manufacturing an explosive device, saying he planned to set off a 200-pound bomb at the National Mall in Washington on Election Day, killing himself and possibly many others.

The FBI raided Rosenfeld's home and found a functional bomb in his basement that consisted of black powder inside a plywood box, according to a criminal complaint.

"As alleged in the complaint, Paul M. Rosenfeld planned to detonate a large explosive to kill himself and draw attention to his radical political beliefs", Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. said in a statement.

Federal law enforcement officials arrested a 56-year-old man in Hudson Valley, New York on Tuesday after learning that he was allegedly planning an election day suicide in Washington, D.C. because he was angered over the nation's politics. A bomb discovered at Rosenfeld's home contained eight pounds of black powder but weighed 200 pounds, mostly due to components used to transport it, authorities add. Rosenfeld is also alleged to have made and tested other bombs "for practice", reports ABC News.

Rosenfeld allegedly told agents during an interview that he had purchased large amounts of the explosive substance, black powder, online, which he picked up and transported from New Jersey to his home in NY, the release said.

USA student held in Israel refuses deal from prosecutors
Alqasem's family said Israel was exaggerating her involvement in SJP, saying she only belonged to the campus group for a semester. Embassy in Israel said it visited Alqasem in detention to ensure she had food and water.

Federal agents also found empty black powder canisters and a fusing system that could trigger an explosive.

On Wednesday, Rosenfeld was charged by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of NY with one count of unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and one count of interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive.

Rosenfeld was said to have sent letters and text messages to a Pennsylvania reporter in August and September detailing his deadly plot, which was thwarted when the reported alerted the authorities.

Rosenfeld had an initial court appearance before a magistrate at a federal courthouse in White Plains on Wednesday afternoon. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Officials say there is no danger or threat to the public.
