Hunt on as Tanzanian billionaire Mohamed Dewji abducted in Dar

Africa's "youngest billionaire", has been kidnapped by masked gunmen in Tanzania's main city, Dar es Salaam.

Dewji, the owner and president of the multi-billion dollar revenue Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd (METL Group), was seized as he arrived for a morning workout at a luxury hotel in the country's commercial capital.

According to Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda, two of the attackers are believed to be foreign nationals.

He said police were looking for suspects and had already made arrests.

Dewji was born in Tanzania and studied at Georgetown University in the United States.

With a reputation as one of East Africa's leading forces in regional trade and business development, Dewji served in parliament from 2005 until 2015. He was abducted by two foreigners, the Swahili Times reported on Twitter, citing Mambosasa.

Eye witnesses said that the kidnappers who had their faces covered, shot in the air before they grabbed the businessman and took off with him.

According to reports, the 44-year-old mogul was walking into the Colosseum Hotel and Fitness Club in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam for his routine gym session during the early hours of Thursday, October 10, when two white men flanked by some accomplices in two cars accosted him, forced put him into the vehicle and zoomed off, Forbes reports. "They then drove quickly from the area and headed towards Masaki", he said.

Mr Dewji is ranked 17th by Forbes on its list of Africa's billionaires.
