STORM CALLUM: Met Eireann extend five weather warnings

Met Éireann say that strong southeast winds associated with the storm coinciding with high spring tides will affect Ireland on Thursday night and into Friday morning.

But heavy rain and strong gales could feature in the weather by the end of the week, with the latest named Storm - Storm Callum - expected to hit the United Kingdom on Friday.

"Winds will reach strong gale force or storm force along the coast with severe or possibly damaging gusts".

Tayside and Fife could avoid the worst of Storm Callum, which is predicted to batter much of Scotland with 80mph wind and torrential rain in the coming days.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for Northern Ireland, western parts of Scotland, Wales and northern parts of England.

"It's not a major event in the east, we don't expect a major flooding event along the east coast", she told RTÉ Radio One's Today with Sean O'Rourke.

A amber warning for rain will be in place for parts of Wales on Thursday, with rainfall of up to 160mm expected to fall and the possibility of flooding.

Met Éireann has upgraded it's weather warning for Clare to Orange.

Arriva Trains Wales is warning passengers to check before they travel as services may be disrupted.

The RSA said that with the risk of coastal flooding, motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded areas.

Director Stephen Stewart said: "Even though power cuts are rare, during times of heavy rain and flooding they become more likely".

The Met Office said that "leaves and twigs, brought down by the wind, could block drains and culverts, increasing the likelihood of flooding". The west coast of Dorset may continue to be affected on Saturday morning. "There could be transport disruption to the air network, rail and roads".

Keep an eye on the rainfall live, using Netweather Radar.

Mean (sustained) wind speeds - Gales 39-46mph.
