Michael 3rd most intense US landfalling hurricane on record

Hurricane Michael smashed into the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday afternoon killing at least two people and bringing destruction to all the towns in his path. Wind damage was also evident.

A day after the supercharged storm crashed ashore amid white sand beaches, fishing towns and military bases, Michael was no longer a Category 4 monster packing 155 miles per hour winds.

"The timing was ghoulishly ideal", said Weather Underground meteorologist Bob Henson.

Michael rapidly intensified as it churned north over the Gulf of Mexico and caught many by surprise. Normally, the seasonal transition from summer to fall causes oceans in the northern hemisphere to cool by October.

The hurricane hit the Florida Panhandle as a category 4 storm. "Look at what is on the list: medical, water, food, shelter, emergency fuel". Oceans supply storms like Michael with water vapor that later becomes high-intensity rain. Isolated areas could get 12 inches and life-threatening flash floods.

The western Caribbean sea, where Michael formed over the weekend, just happens to be one of the hottest areas of the Atlantic Ocean.

As the Category 4 storm's center crossed nearby, Mulligan said, the concrete building shook and vibrated against sustained winds around 155 miles per hour. The reason? Michaels late formation exposed it to the kind of weather system Wednesday normally see later in the year. Michael was more intense at landfall than hurricanes Andrew, Katrina and Maria.

Michael is expected to be even more powerful than Hurricane Florence, which had wind speeds of 90mph when it struck the Carolinas in September.

Even before landfall, the hurricane disrupted energy operations in the Gulf, cutting crude oil production by more than 40 percent and natural gas output by almost one-third as offshore platforms were evacuated before the storm hit. It's expected to gradually weaken over land. Michael is no exception. The forecast cone for Hurricane Michael stretches all the way from Florida up to New Jersey.

As Hurricane Michael barreled through the Gulf of Mexico toward northwest Florida on Wednesday, unsafe storm surges had already begun flooding the state's vulnerable coastal communities.

Measured by barometric pressure, Michael ranks as the third-most-intense storm on record to make landfall in the USA, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency said that storm surge is continuing to inundate parts of the Florida Panhandle.

Michael gained sudden force Tuesday night as it churned over the Gulf of Mexico.

Michaels speed made it a hard storm to prepare for.

By late Wednesday, the storm had moved toward Georgia.

When Irma bore down on the state, Scott was able to warn Floridians for over a week before it made its landfall just south of Naples.

Pensacola-based Gulf Power estimated that up to 225,000 of its customers could be impacted by the storm that pounded the Panhandle throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

"There are so many downed power lines and trees that it's nearly impossible to get through the city", Apalachicola Mayor Van Johnson said.
