Why you should care about half a degree of global warming

"We need to avoid emissions while reducing poverty".

Science shows that nothing does more to cause climate change than burning coal, a former head of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Tuesday, a position in contrast to President Donald Trump's pro-fossil fuel policies.

This change will not happen, however, unless leaders in politics and business put their money where their mouth is and finally deliver the billions of dollars needed to make the transition to a green economy.

The stunning statistics were released Monday in a report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which warned that we must take "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" in order to save our planet. "India must take the lead in forming a global coalition for a 1.5°C world to save its poor and vulnerable population", CSE said.

It furthers the Paris Agreement of 2015, where and aim of limiting global temperature rises to "well below" 2C was set. More than 1,000 scientists reviewed the findings.

Global temperature is now rising 0.2C with each decade, and it is estimated we will reach 1.5C by 2040. "This points out that every fraction of a degree really does matter".

"E$3 ven with erroneous attribution of extreme weather/climate events and projections using climate models that are running too hot and not fit for goal of projecting 21st century climate change, the IPCC still has not made a strong case for this massive investment to prevent 1.5C warming", she said on her Climate Etc. blog. That slower rate of rising water would mean that people living in island nations and along coastlines would have more time to adapt.

"Accordingly, the world would witness greater sea level rise, increased precipitation and higher frequency of droughts and floods, hotter days and heatwaves, more intense tropical cyclones, and increased ocean acidification and salinity". The limited temperature increase would result in the saving of at least some of the world's coral reefs, a key ecosystem supporting global fisheries. "Coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5°C, whereas virtually all ( 99 percent) would be lost with 2°C".

Irish data regulator seeks information from Google on security bug
Google's announcement doesn't specifically state how many people are actually using Google+, only saying that it's "low". Our goal is to support a wide range of useful apps, while ensuring that everyone is confident that their data is secure.

Half a degree more (about.9 F) might sound small. We're expected to hit that 1.5-degree mark around 2040.

If the average global temperature temporarily exceeded 1.5C, additional carbon removal techniques would be required to return warming to below 1.5C by 2100. And that would have the side benefit of avoiding more than 100 million premature deaths through this century, the report said. The agency removed its section on climate change from its website past year for an "update" that has yet to materialize.

"This report gives policymakers and practitioners the information they need to make decisions that tackle climate change while considering local context and people's needs", she said.

Society would have to enact "unprecedented" changes to how it consumes energy, travels and builds to meet a lower global warming target or it risks increases in heat waves, flood-causing storms and the chances of drought in some regions as well as the loss of species, a United Nations report said on Monday.

Using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, the share of gas-fired power would need to be cut to 8 percent and coal to under 2 percent. However, the damage is already done in so many fragile ecologies.

Another recent report from the consulting firm PwC makes it clear that even limiting warming to 2 degrees C will be a stretch: "There seems to be nearly zero chance of limiting warming to well below two degrees (the main goal of the Paris Agreement), though widespread use of carbon capture and storage technologies, including Natural Climate Solutions, may make this possible", it says.

Of course, these two methods will need a lot of global political engagement in an increasingly short time, and with certain big player administrations like Trump's now stalling worldwide cooperation, that 2030 deadline is looking more and more ominous.
