RUMOR: Sources Reporting that Microsoft May Be Buying Obsidian Entertainment

According to sources close to Kotaku, Microsoft is now finalizing a deal to acquire the independent company to gain another first party studio. We don't know if ink is on paper yet, and plenty of major acquisition deals have fallen apart in the final hours, but those close to the companies believe it is all but done.

Sources close to the matter speaking with Kotaku said the deal is "90%" finished. The studio was saved from closure, however, by the success of its crowdfunded project "Pillars of Eternity" in 2015, which raised almost $4 million.

Obsidian's relationship with Microsoft doesn't leave much in the way of company friendship. The company is now working on a new RPG that still has no release date. "Unfortunately, we don't comment on rumors or speculation other than to say that the Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up", said a spokesperson from Obsidian.

'Team player' Brett Kavanaugh sworn in again as US Supreme Court Justice
Other analysts said the court's reputation could suffer as it becomes perceived as a political, rather than a legal, institution. Trump signed Kavanaugh's commission later Saturday, with Chief Justice John Roberts swearing in the new justice Saturday night.

"We do not comment on rumours or speculation", said a Microsoft spokesperson. The companies did not say anything about which consoles the RPG will be available on, and it isn't clear how this sale will affect that game. Obsidian games are also known to be often riddled with bugs at launch and perhaps Microsoft's Quality Assurance department can lend a hand with that particular issue. This year alone, it has acquired Playground, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Compulsion. "People want to play great games on our platform".

If the rumors are true, it would mean that one of the most well-respected RPG developers would come under the banner of Microsoft.

That statement seems to suggest this deal will not alter Obsidian's agreement with Private Label, but it may impact which systems the untitled Obsidian project is released for. And the move appears to make sense for both parties.
