Pres. Trump Hosts Ceremonial Swearing-in For Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh

WASHINGTON-US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was apologizing on behalf of the whole country to his new conservative Supreme Court justice after one of the most contentious confirmation processes in history of the United States.

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress - predicted that Democrats would pay for their attempts to block the confirmation, especially during the lurid debate over decades-old sexual assault allegations. But he didn't say that was such great news.

Justice Roberts said: "We wish you a long and happy career in our common calling".

Mr Kavanaugh now moves to the Supreme Court after spending 12 years as a judge on the influential US Court of Appeals in Washington, where he built a conservative judicial record and a reputation for being affable and well prepared.

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with several seats up for grabs in November.

If that doesn't happen, Limbaugh said that Democrats may "lose it". Two other women also accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct dating to the 1980s. He emphatically denied the allegations. They have included, but were not limited to: a dissenting ruling in favor of stop-and-frisk policing; writing about racial profiling that "The desire to remedy societal discrimination is not a compelling interest;" and decidedly opposing affirmative action. It's fitting, as one of Kavanaugh's accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, said he sexually assaulted her when they were in high school in the 1980s, and another, Deborah Ramirez, accused him of sexual misconduct when he was a Yale student.

Kavanaugh was confirmed 50-48 Saturday, the closest vote to confirm a justice since 1881, and has had a busy three days since then. Trump and other GOP leaders say the effort energized Republican voters, who had always been considered less energized than Democrats.

Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that "nobody's going to beat" Alaska Sen. He noted that Murkowski won election on write-in votes in 2010 and said, "She's about as strong as you can possibly be in Alaska".

As he has been doing often recently on the campaign trail, Trump singled out specific Democrats for scorn - including Sens.

He is also scheduled to take part in an "unusual" televised appearance with the president, sources told the Associated Press, but Mr Trump has flown to Florida for a trip. "Even the reporter who broke the story said it wasn't me or my staff", Feinstein continued.

The Democrats are holding out hope that a "blue wave" of supporters energised by opposition to the Trump presidency can lead to a string of unexpected victories.

But according to a new survey from Rasmussen Reports, Republican voters are furious about the salacious, unfounded accusations lobbed at Kavanaugh and are more likely to vote in the upcoming midterm elections as a result.

President Donald Trump's appointee wasted little time in getting down to business, asking his first question of a lawyer representing a defendant about 20 minutes into arguments concerning a federal criminal sentencing law.
