Google Launches a Pixel-Branded Premium Chromebook Tablet

Why Google Thinks Its New Pixel Slate Will Win the Shrinking Tablet Market

What I think will turn the most heads is Google's decision to leave out a camera.

The Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3XL go on sale in the United States starting October 19 and will be available in more markets on November 1.

The Pixel 3 packs in a host of new ideas about how AI can change the phone experience - from the practical to the pretty out-there.

But what about this years? Gboard, the keyboard built into your Pixel 3, will recommend GIFs, stickers and more, to make your conversations fun and engaging.

Google is holding a launch event today called "Made by Google", where the search giant is expected to launch a plethora of new devices.

In contrast to the other Android-equipped offerings on the market, the Pixel is seen as a step between Apple's iOS and other flagship phones from competitors like Samsung. They flaunt Pixel's iconic two-tone design, which is defined by a soft-touch glass back that feels great in the hand.

Aside from that, and the obvious size differences, you won't find a lot of disparity between the two devices' aesthetics.

Lastly, both phones get a new color called Not Pink.

Google Chromecast is all-new, sort of
Now here we are a few weeks later and the newest version of the streaming device is now the real deal. Google will also roll out this function to current owners of the second-generation Chromecast , too.

The Pixel Slate starts at $599 for an Intel Celeron Processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage. There's also a USB Type-C port on one of its sides. You know the drill.

The Pixel 3 uses Google Lens to pick up URLs, phone numbers emails and addresses in the real world so you can use them with your phone, without having to launch a specific app, and also comes with closer Google Assistant integration and the full version of Google's Digital Wellbeing suite. There's a notch on the top of the 3 XL, but the Pixel 3 simply adopts a similar curved cornered screen as found on the Pixel 2.

Flip both phones over and you'll find a single rear camera, bucking the trend for dual camera smartphones that are in vogue right now. As before, Google's rear snapper is just phenomenal. On top of that, the Pixel 3 comes with front-facing video stabilization, keeping things steady if you're walking or moving around while recording yourself.

The AI in Pixel 3 enables new features that make your day-to-day actions simpler and easier. Google may call this feature original, but it's essentially a copycat of what you can do with Key Photos in iOS. Google calls this "Group Selfie Mode" and spent some time shooting zingers at the iPhone by saying how many more people you can fit into your frame. If you don't use the flash, the shot will be unusably grainy, but if you do use it, it could look artificial and non-flattering.

The more unique camera improvements include Night Sight, which uses machine learning to choose the right colors in extreme low light based on the content of the image. Not bad, if not a tad worrying. On the surface the new phone's notch is the only really obvious change, but there's plenty more going on beneath the surface. We're glad to have it back though. Both phones still have front-facing speakers, but the Pixel 3 XL's are supposedly 40% louder and richer. The new generation of Pixel phones features an improved camera that's backed by Google's AI. It displays information on the phone screen and can be operated completely by voice.

Google opened up pre-orders for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL immediately after they were announced, which is always a treat. It's the first time Google has embraced the format, which Apple adopted previous year with its ballyhooed iPhone X. Unfortunately, only time can tell on that.

The Pixel Slate tablet has a 6-million pixel display and was described as "a ideal device for play and work", by Trond Wuellner, Google's director of product management.
