Taylor Swift’s Political Comments Lead to Spike in Voter Registration

On Sunday Swift bashed Republican Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn

Pop star Taylor Swift's coming out against the Republican candidate and in support of the Democrat in a Senate race in her home state of Tennessee has caused voter registrations to spike.

Kamari Guthrie, director of communications for Vote.org told Buzzfeed News that they have experienced an unprecedented flood of new voter registrations across America since Swift's post was posted. By comparison, the site registered 56,669 new voters registered the entire month of August and 190,178 in September.

The Bad Blood singer backed Phil Bredesen on Sunday for the upper house in her home state, and unleashed a fierce attack on his opponent, Republican Marsha Blackburn, who now serves in the House.

"As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I can not support Marsha Blackburn", Swift wrote. "Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me", the 28-year-old said.

Several states require prospective voters to register by Tuesday in order to vote November 6.

The organization also said it received at least 2,144 voter registrations from Tennessee residents in the past 36 hours since her post, nearly half of the 5,183 people who have registered to vote there in October. In the 24 hours after Swift's post - which specifically mentioned Vote.org - the site had 155,940 visitors. The site's average amount of daily users is 14,078.

With Jay Ajayi Done, the Eagles Should Trade for Le'Veon Bell
Thirty-five year old Darren Sproles figured prominently in the opener, but hasn't played since due to a hamstring injury. Or, of course, they could try to pursue trades for other, cheaper running backs or simply sign an existing free agent.

President Trump, naturally, weighed in on the matter: "I'm sure Taylor Swift doesn't know anything about [Blackburn]".

Some others weren't too keen on Swift's newfound political stance.

Swift's post drew criticism from Donald Trump, who told reporters on Monday, "Marsha Blackburn is doing a very good job in Tennessee".

The haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. "I can not vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love". But they also enraged many conservatives, especially those in the country music community where Swift got her start as a teenager and went on to win 10 Grammys. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I can not support Marsha Blackburn. She also declared her vote for Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples.

Swift's previous unwillingness to weigh in on political matters led some members of the alt-right movement to claim her as one of their own, a phenomenon that her representatives have rejected. These are not MY Tennessee values. They are running for the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. "But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do", tthe singer wrote. "Last day to register to vote is October 9".

Vote.org acknowledged it was not possible to measure the direct impact of Swift's impact.
