'Making a Murderer Part 2' takes on the whole legal system

Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey's cases gained national attention after Netflix aired Making a Murderer

"I have one goal and that's to overturn the conviction of Steven Avery", she said in the video.

Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos return for Season 2 to examine the post-conviction process and see if there's any chance of clearing Steven's name once and for all.

The second season revolves around Avery's post-conviction lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, and her fight to win his freedom.

"This is critical, there's an abundance of new evidence", Zellner continues. A notable example is revealed in the trailer, with Zellner revealing a huge hole in the original case. "The prosecution's case was that Teresa never left the property", Zellner states of the new evidence to be brought into question in Part 2.

The first series garnered a huge worldwide audience when it was released in November 2015. Specifically, the series chronicles the story of Steven Avery and his 16-year old nephew Brendan Dassey who were both convicted of first degree murder for the killing of Teresa Halbach. A Wisconsin judge denied Avery a new trial in October, and a federal appeals court upheld Dassey's conviction in December. Following his release, Avery filed a civil lawsuit against Mantiwoc County for $36 million (£27.3m), which was still pending when he was arrested in connection to Halbach's murder.

Released almost three years after the show's December 2015 debut, the second season will cover the appeals of Avery and Dassey, re-examining the evidence that prompted a guilty verdict and following attempts to have Dassey's case heard in the supreme court. A petition asking the president to pardon Avery received 500,000 signatures, and the White House released a statement explaining the president can not pardon people convicted of a state crime.

Since the first series aired there have been numerous developments in the cases. This time, prominent defense attorney Kathleen Zellner, who holds the US record for most overturned wrongful convictions, is on the case. However, Kratz was forced to resign as district attorney after several women came forward claiming he sexually harassed them. Dassey has argued detectives coerced him into confessing that he helped Avery rape and kill Halbach.
