Officials Confirm West Nile Virus Case in Atlantic County

Look for Increased Pest Pressure this Fall and Winter NPMA Says

Man in 70s was hospitalized in Barnstable County.

Georgia health officials say a Dunwoody woman in her 90s has died from West Nile Virus.

The previous record was 33 cases in 2012, the statement says.

It was first detected in Greece in 2010, with 262 confirmed cases and 35 deaths.

Of the nine, two remain hospitalized, six were hospitalized, and one was not hospitalized.

"The forecast includes some warm fall temperatures", said Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD, MPH.

"The positive human cases and positive mosquito pools is a clear indication that threat of West Nile virus is present within our region and the public must take measures to protect themselves", said Kwesi Douglas, program manager of environmental health at the HNHU. "Mosquitoes might still be active and it remains important for people to use mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves to reduce exposed skin". There is no vaccine or treatment for West Nile.

The last reported case of someone dying from West Nile virus in the area was back in 2016.
