DHS: No Reason to Doubt Firms’ Denials of China Hack

Lenovo whose products include virtual reality glasses was among Asian technology companies whose shares fell

Last week, we told you about a report from Bloomberg that accused the Chinese of inserting "spy chips" inside servers that were delivered to major tech companies like Apple and Amazon. (AAPL) and Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN) denials that their servers were compromised by Chinese spy chips.

A report published last week by Bloomberg Businessweek claimed that China had infiltrated servers of 30 USA companies, including Apple and Amazon.

Now the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the GCHQ arm the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have both joined Amazon, Apple and Supermicro in denying the claims. Millions of Americans rely on the company to protect the privacy of their data on iCloud and other online services. In a statement of its own, Amazon said it had found "no evidence to support claims of malicious chips or hardware modifications". This chip was said to act as a back door for Chinese spies, allowing data to be covertly stolen.

"In the end, our internal investigations directly contradict every consequential assertion made in the article-some of which, we note, were based on a single anonymous source", Stathakopoulos wrote. "We never alerted the FBI to any security concerns like those described in the article, nor has the FBI ever contacted us about such an investigation", Stathakopoulos wrote. In a follow-up email to Ars, Apple confirmed that this denial applies to other government agencies as well. Apple and Amazon also provided detailed assessments to authorities to clear up the issue. "Nothing was ever found".

Simon Coveney Calls For Intensive Talks As Brexit Deal Hopes Rise
A deal needs to be sealed within weeks if the European and British parliaments are to have time to approve it before March. Since then officials have been meeting behind the scenes before a key two-day summit in Brussels that begins on October 17.

The executive also said he would be available to address the issue with members of Congress this week.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement on Saturday that says it is aware of the original Bloomberg report that discusses a "technology supply chain compromise".

The letter comes in response to a story Bloomberg Businessweek published Thursday. "I don't know what to believe, but at the same time it doesn't really matter, because it's possible, and we have to act like it is true to solve the problem".

Cyber security agencies in the United Kingdom and U.S. have played down claims that the China military inserted spy chips into computer hardware before it was exported overseas.
