Overdose of erectile dysfunction drug turns man's vision red

Though it's uncommon sildenafil is known to cause temporary visual changes

More specifically, the guy took sildenafil citrate in its liquid form, which is also the active compound in the popular Viagra potency drug.

The medicine was sildenafil citrate, which is commonly sold under the brand name Viagra.

The report noted side effects of sildenafil citrate include blurred vision and increased light sensitivity.

The story of the man who now has a permanent red tint to his vision after overdosing on Viagra was covered in Retinal Cases and Brief Reports.

The patient was diagnosed with "irreversible erythropsia", which characterised by red-tinted vision, at Mount Sinai Hospital in NY.

In a statement, a doctor said the case "shows how risky a large dose of a commonly used medication can be".

Step into the boots of Grayson Hunt after a crash landing on an abandoned resort planet forces him to make a hard choice: survival or revenge.

Temporary red-tinted vision, or erythropsia, can be caused by more than 20 different medications and sometimes occurs after cataract surgery, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Doctors found the patient to have cone photoreceptor damage and his symptoms lasted for several months.

Although sildenafil citrate is known to cause visual disturbances that resolve within a day, this case points towards long-term or even irreversible damage.

His official diagnosis was "persistent retinal toxicity", the report concluded.

But a man got more than he bargained for when he faced unexpected side effects from erectile dysfunction drugs. Gizmodo reported there the drug has been linked to vision loss in some cases - though it's not known if the medication was the direct cause. "This study shows how risky a large dose of a commonly used medication can be", said lead investigator Dr. Richard Rosen, director of retina services at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, in a press release.

"People live by the philosophy that if a little bit is good, a lot is better", said Richard Rosen, the Director of Retina Services at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, and lead investigator of the case, in a statement.
