Zhang downs Kerber to set up Osaka clash in Beijing

German second seed Angelique Kerber is out of the China Open after losing in three sets to China's Zhang Shuai.

Osaka nailed six aces and won 93 percent of points on first serve, winning 100 percent in the second set alone.

Naomi Osaka of Japan serves while competing against Julia Goerges of Germany in their third round women's singles match in the China Open at the National Tennis Stadium in Beijing, on October 4, 2018.

Goerges, who cracked the top-10 for the first time this season, committed 31 unforced errors and was unable to contend with her Japanese-Haitian opponent's almost flawless service game.

"I can defeat a former number one, a Grand Slam champion, this is something I'm proud of for the rest of my life", an elated Zhang said.

So everyone got the name of Harry and Meghan's dog completely wrong
She continued, "Doria might be her best friend now because she ghosted her friend of 30 years". She then responded to a follower by all but calling out Doria as an absentee mother.

Looking ahead to her game against Osaka, the Chinese told the WTA's official website: "Today Kerber was the Wimbledon champion, and tomorrow it will be a US Open champion". My goal is to play the best I can. "I think Naomi is a really good server, very aggressive, and I hope there will be something I can learn from her".

Up next for Zhang is U.S. Open champion Osaka, who thumped Julia Goerges 6-1 6-2 and described the performance as her best of the tournament so far. Later today, China's other remaining participant in the tournament, Wang Qiang, takes on Karolina Pliskova.

The Japanese 20-year-old made a slow start - saving a break point and enduring five deuces in the eight-minute first game - but she broke Goerges' serve in the next game and raced to 5-0.

"For me, I don't know, I don't know, the memory of the US Open is a little bit bittersweet", Osaka said on Monday. In the men's draw, top seed Juan Martin del Potro called for treatment by a physio but was mostly comfortable in beating Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5, 6-2 in his opener. Also safely into round two is third seed Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated the American Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-3.
