Theresa May demands European Union 'respects' United Kingdom in Brexit talks

Theresa May arrives at the Salzburg summit which turned into a disaster for her

No major consensus on Brexit so far and rising voices calling for a second referendum in Britain - that is the hard reality, which mirrors a political chaos in the United Kingdom and can not be sidestepped by the ruling Conservative Party and opposition Labour Party when they meet at their separate annual conferences over the country's major political issues.

"We may be polite, but we have a bottom line".

"They will see that the United Kingdom has become a vassal state, that we have not taken back control, but lost control".

May's defiant statement was welcomed on Saturday by many in the British press that had seen the Salzburg summit as a failure for her.

The Daily Mirror says the Prime Minister has "misread nearly every step of the negotiation process".

But initial reactions from across the English Channel suggested France and Germany were digging in too. "That's the message we have tried to send for several months now to our British counterparts, who may have thought we were going to say "yes" to whatever deal they came up with".

Meawhile The Times reported Mr Javid was set to further anger Brexiteers that new controls should not be imposed on European Union migrants for more than two years in the event of a no-deal break in order to protect the economy. "The shambles in Salzburg leaves us without a coherent or plausible Brexit plan", the paper says.

The Daily Telegraph reported that ministers meant to use a Cabinet meeting tomorrow to call on Mrs May to develop a "Plan B" alternative to Chequers.

NC woman may face charges for sheltering pets in unregistered shelter
She acknowledges that the facility is not formally registered as a shelter, but said she believes she shouldn't face charges. According to the Facebook post, Hedges was released on an unsecured bond of $10,000 and will appear in court in October.

Tusk's rejection of the Chequers plan has created a political problem for the prime minister ahead of the Conservative Party conference.

Arlene Foster, leader of Northern Ireland's DUP, who Mrs May relies on for a Commons majority in key votes, said the prime minister was "right to stand firm in the face of disrespectful, intransigent and disgraceful behaviour by the European Union".

"I am not sure there is life left in Chequers.", Nicky Morgan, chair of parliament's Treasury Select Committee and a former government minister, told Sky News.

At the Conservative Party conference past year, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the prime minister.

"At this late stage in the negotiations, it is not acceptable to simply reject the other side's proposals without a detailed explanation and counter proposals".

In particular Mr Hunt made clear Britain could not accept the EU's "backstop" plan for the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic to avoid the return of a hard border in the event that there was no agreement on new customs arrangements.

The Express calls her speech her "finest hour" and says she was right to demand respect from the European Union and the Daily Mail says Mrs May "confronted the arrogance of the European Union elite with unyielding, level-headed reason" and describes the EU's behaviour in Salzburg as "shabby".

Despite the differences, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney told RTE radio an Irish backstop was "doable" by an October summit.
