Donlad Trump's Supreme Court pick faces new sexual misconduct claim

U.S. President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is sworn in before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington on Sept. 4 2018. Both parties are grappling with tremendous political risks in the midst of an increa

Judge Brett Kavanaugh is now facing a new allegation from another woman who says he exposed himself without her consent during their college years at Yale.

"This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen", Kavanaugh said in a statement provided by the White House.

The New Yorker says she has asked the FBI to investigate.

Lawyers for Ford said in a statement on Sunday that she has committed to testifying in an open hearing on Thursday about her allegation of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

"Various senators have been dismissive of her (Ford's) account and should have to shoulder their responsibility to ask her questions", Ford's lawyers say. Kavanaugh, 53, an appellate court judge, denied the allegation and said he wanted to testify as soon as possible to clear his name.

The White House is approaching Ford's potential testimony with trepidation, nervous that an emotional performance might not just damage Kavanaugh's chances but could further energize female voters to turn out against Republicans in November.

The committee reached out to the friend on Tuesday as someone who was possibly in attendance at the party where Ford alleges an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her, put his hand over her mouth to stifle her screams and tried to remove her clothes.

But the statement from Blasey Ford's team noted committee Republicans' refusal to invite other alleged witnesses of the assault to give testimony, and said it was "unresolved" whether "senators or staff attorneys" for the majority would be asking questions at the hearing.

At about the same time, Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who rose to fame by aggressively taking on President Donald Trump on behalf of his client Stormy Daniels, tweeted that he had another woman with an allegation who will be demanding that Kavanaugh's nomination be withdrawn.

Ford identified one other witness, Mark Judge, in a September 16 Washington Post article where she first told her story.

China cancels trade talks with US

Democrats called for the FBI to investigate Ms Ford's claims, a request that was unlikely to be met as President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans have said it is unnecessary.

Professor Christine Blasey Ford, who came forward last week, has agreed to be questioned publicly at a committee hearing on Thursday.

"I would think an FBI investigation would be warranted", she told The New Yorker.

Hesaid the fact that Ms Ford remained silent until now shows the incident probably never happened - even if this runs counter to what experts say is the typical reaction of sexual assault victims afraid or too embarrassed to report. Judge wrote a book in which he described a culture of heavy drinking during his younger years; Ford has said both he and Kavanaugh were "stumbling drunk" when the assault took place.

"This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man".

But Republicans do not want to look as if they are badgering a woman who claims to be the victim of a sexual assault just weeks before congressional elections with control of Congress at stake. "It's also unremarkable that Ms. Keyser does not remember attending a specific gathering 30 years ago at which nothing of effect happened to her. Dr. Ford, of course, will never forget this gathering because of what happened to her there". Meanwhile, one other classmate told The New Yorker that while they were not a witness to the alleged encounter, they heard about it.

"The framing at the moment is these two dichotomies of either completely exposing yourself to huge amounts of personal and professional risk, or saying nothing", she said.

Earlier Saturday amid the latest deadline standoff Vice President Mike Pence called Kavanaugh "a man of integrity with impeccable credentials".

But before long, Christine Blasey Ford knew better.
