Watch Diego Schwartzman introduce John Isner to the Laver Cup stage

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer paired up for the men's doubles match against Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock during Team Europe vs Team World match on Day 1 of the Laver Cup on Friday.

Despite their status as greats of the game, the U.S. duo of Jack Sock and South Africa's Kevin Anderson pulled off a thrilling 6-7 6-3 10-6 win, with the match likely to be remembered for this unfortunate moment as Djokovic smashed a ball into his illustrious partner.

The lack of experience in doubles again showed up as Federer and Djokovic failed to match up the doubles specialist Sock and his partner Anderson.

The moment occurred in the very first game.

Federer wasn't hurt by the shot and laughed it off, while Djokovic covered his face with his hands in embarrassment.

The current Wimbledon and US Open champion was quick to see the amusing side, however, and immediately rushed to Federer's aid before giving him a hearty rub on the back to make amends.

There were also wins for Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov who beat America's Frances Tiafoe 6-1 6-4 and for Belgium's David Goffin, who defeated Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 6-4 4-6 11-9.

Federer, playing with a red racket, took the forehand side and Djokovic the backhand side against the hard-serving Anderson and doubles standout Sock.

The exhibition is taking place on U.S. soil for the first time and features 12 of the world's top players squaring off against each other in a three-day showcase which wraps up Sunday in Chicago.

Schwartzman and Isner will be representing Team World in the second instalment of the Laver Cup from Chicago this weekend.

Federer played in the first Laver Cup but Djokovic is taking part for the first time. The duo won the tie-breaker 10-6 and the match 6-7 (5) 6-3 10-6 to earn the first point for Team World.

Federer and Djokovic took a while to settle into the format and won the opening set but their opponents soon found their rhythm.
