Puerto Rico is stronger after Hurricane Maria, residents say

The White House said Thursday it has made "significant progress" in restoring normal life on the USA island territory of Puerto Rico, exactly a year after the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria.

Rossell, who has been reluctant to contradict the President in the past over his handling of the hurricane, previously disputed Trump's statement on the revised death toll, telling CBS News, "Neither the people of Puerto Rico nor the victims deserve their pain to be questioned".

And as American disaster relief efforts turn their focus to the Carolinas and the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, Puerto Ricans have stopped holding their breath waiting for Trump's self-aggrandized success to actually materialize, while continuing to band together in efforts to rebuild the island, by whatever means possible.

Make The Road plans to hold demonstrations, meetings or some activity every 20th of the month with the goal of aiding the people of Puerto Rico, spokeswoman Ashleigh Strange said.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said this week that the government is suing insurance companies that it says have not responded quickly enough to damage claims from the storm.

Like many, Rodriguez hoped that after Thursday, she would no longer be bombarded by photos and videos that make her feel like she's reliving Hurricane Maria. The exact death toll figure remains unknown, and the governor has admitted his administration failed to properly record storm-related deaths.

In the video, the driver is heard cheering as he strikes the birds on a dirt road with his auto . Two men who resemble the driver from the video have been inundated with abuse on social media.

Last week, President Donald Trump took to his Twitter account to insult the people of Puerto Rico, falsely claiming that the reported death toll from 2017's Hurricane Maria, totaled at nearly 3,000 lost lives, was a false statistic, allegedly inflated "by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible".

Striking Puerto Rico's already tenuous infrastructure and power grid with 155 mile-per-hour winds for days on end, Hurricane Maria caused an estimated $95 billion dollars in damage to the small island, leaving thousands of people without working electricity for up to eight months.

Researchers at George Washington University concluded last month that almost 3,000 Puerto Ricans were killed by the storm, comparing normal mortality on the island with the number who died in the months after the hurricane.

Last week, Trump disputed the new estimate, tweeting, "When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths". As time went by it did not go up by much. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list.

"And why, when Katrina struck, did they pay 100 percent of the emergency work and they did not extend this to Puerto Rico?"
