Brett Kavanaugh nomination: Trump challenges accuser

CBS News has obtained an email sent by a Republican staffer on the Senate Judiciary Committee to a woman who may have attended the party in 1982 where Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh allegedly sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

'I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!'

For their part, Democrats say Republicans are mounting an unseemly rush to get Kavanaugh into the nine-member Supreme Court while they still control the legislature.

Christine Blasey Ford, a Palo Alto, Calif., professor, alleges that a drunk Kavanaugh, then 17, pinned her on a bed when she was 15 and tried to remove her clothes while covering her mouth with his hand as his friend watched. Kavanuagh has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reassured Republicans that Judge Brett KavanaughPresident Donald Trump's Supreme Court pick now facing a sexual assault accusation ― will soon take his place on the highest court in the nation.

"We're going to plough through all of this and do our job".

The accusation has jarred the 53-year-old conservative jurist's prospects for winning confirmation, which until Professor Ford's emergence last week had seemed all but certain. "All of the sudden, that disqualifies this man?" he said on the "Focal Point" show on American Family Radio.

The women also questioned the claims of his accuser. In the call, she said Ford needs time to secure her family, prepare her testimony and travel to Washington.

"1000s & 1000s of strong women have kept being assaulted to themselves for a variety of understandable reasons", Schumer tweeted.

The GOP is defending House and Senate majorities in the election, and though Trump is not on the ballot November 6, the contest is widely considered a referendum on his stewardship.

Cubs' Addison Russell placed on leave over abuse claims
While the Cubs themselves can't punish Russell at this time during the investigation, they could release him if they wanted to. Russell and the Cubs are expected to make a statement regarding Melisa's post before the start of the Crosstown Classic.

Trump's abrupt change of course put off at least one person he may need to confirm Kavanaugh in the Senate Republicans narrowly control, 51-49. If two Republicans vote against Kavanaugh, his nomination could fail. "Facts don't matter. I go through this with them every single day in D.C.", the president added. Her lawyers said Thursday that she will agree to a hearing if they can find "terms that are fair and which ensure her safety", CNN reports.

Although inferring otherwise, Whelan said he's not insinuating that the man he publicly named and shared photos of did anything wrong, or that Ford is now "mistakenly remembering" this man as Kavanaugh.

"In the very near future, Judge Kavanaugh will be on the United States Supreme Court", he said firmly.

In a separate letter to Democrats, Mr Grassley wrote that committee aides were "even willing to fly to California, or anywhere else, to meet her". She provided therapist notes from well before Kavanaugh was such a public figure.

Reporters had assigned seating and were kept separated from the nominee, who was whisked to and from the room.

The Senate Judiciary committee has given Ford's attorneys a 10 p.m. deadline on Friday to respond to their offer to testify next Wednesday about the incident, according to a Republican source familiar with the discussions.

According to reports on Thursday, the Republicans are considering hiring a female outside litigator to handle the questioning, which would be televised nationally.

Republicans and Ford were negotiating Friday on whether Ford will testify next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), said through a spokesman late Thursday that he would be consulting with colleagues on how to proceed.

The message and positive tone of the attorney's email breathed new life into the possibility that the panel would hold a dramatic hearing at which both Ford and Kavanaugh could give their versions of what happened at a party in the 1980s in a Maryland suburb of Washington.

Sara Fagen, another longtime friend who worked with Kavanaugh in the White House, told a story about how Kavanaugh helped her the day of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
