Woods seizes share of early lead at Tour Championship

On a hot, stifling day, the 42-year-old took a buoyant opening stride towards that goal with an impressive 65 to share the first round lead with Ryder Cup team mate Rickie Fowler.

A day after opening with a course-record equalling 62 at Aronimink Golf Club and sharing the lead, Woods stalled during an even-par 70 that left him at eight- under-par and five shots off the pace.

Justin Rose, in his debut as the No 1 player in the world, got up and down from the bunker for birdie on the 18th for a 66 and was tied with Gary Woodland.

The 20-footer on the last was the obvious highlight, but there were five birdies in an excellent ball-striking display as he "beat" his playing partner, England's Tommy Fleetwood, by four strokes. "I hit a lot of really good iron shots close, and then a few other bonus kind of things happened where I holed the bunker shot on 18 and holed a long putt on No. 8".

"Overall, I felt in control today".

Though Saudi Arabia has never tested such high levels, it has said it pumped 10.7-10.8 million bpd in the past. A new set of U.S. sanctions is due to hit the Islamic republic's oil industry on November 4.

"Once it reached its peak and I saw it was going through the wind I started walking (because) I knew it was good", he said. We hope he continues to play well. "I just want to play a little bit better and beat him".

Rose looked nervous at the start but three birdies in a row around the turn changed the outlook of his round, as did a typically strong birdie-birdie finish.

FedExCup points leader Bryson DeChambeau battled to a 71 to lie equal 21st in the 30-man field. Finau overcame a pair of early bogeys for his 67. He figures to have plenty of support. It hasn't been like that in several years.

"I hadn't played this tournament in five years, and some of the people said they haven't been out here in five years", Woods said.

"But more than anything, I missed it all on the correct sides".
