United Kingdom and European Union 'at an impasse' in Brexit negotiations, says Theresa May

Prime Minister Theresa May's "humiliation" at the hands of European Union leaders who rejected her Brexit plans dominated Britain's front pages Friday, although eurosceptic publications accused her tormenters of mafia-style behaviour.

"It is not acceptable to simply reject the other side's proposals without a detailed explanation and counter proposals", May said.

The Prime Minister revived a warning that no deal is better than a bad deal, a day after European Union leaders bluntly told her that her blueprint for the divorce will not work.

She also sought to reassure those living in Northern Ireland that her government would do everything to prevent a hard border with the Irish Republic.

Sterling extended its losses as May spoke, falling to as low as $1.3080, about 1.4 percent on the day, putting it on course for its biggest one-day drop this year, over growing fears Britain could leave the European Union without any deal.

In her press conference yesterday she looked rattled, perspiring as she tried to answer questions on a situation that had gone off script - the summit that was supposed to generate some positivity for her approach, ending in what some newspapers described as "humiliation".

She challenged European Council President Donald Tusk who said on Thursday Britain's proposals would "undermine the single market". "A good relationship at the end of this process".

Mrs May was left looking isolated after leaders told her to rework her plans, and set her a deadline of next month to come back with new ideas.

'I think we have made more preparations for a no deal than the United Kingdom has, ' said Dutch PM Mark Rutte.

Jack Ma: 1 million US jobs pledge thwarted by trade row
However, he finished by saying that his company would try hard to promote the healthy development of China-US trade. Gittens reports . "That premise no longer exists today, so our promise can not be fulfilled", he said .

'So don't worry. Be happy, don't worry.' Mrs May was buoyed ahead of the talks when the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said he hoped a deal could be sealed in six to eight weeks.

"The next time, we need the facts out and people who actually believe in remain.who are prepared to make the big emotional arguments and put all the arguments on the table".

'In the meantime, we must and will continue the work of preparing ourselves for no deal.

Some drama is often seen as a useful part of reaching a diplomatic deal that is unlikely to be popular with voters, but there was also some concern in Brussels that it will be useful to keep tempers in check as both sides try to avoid a stalemate. "We are at an impasse", she said in a speech on Friday inside her London residence.

"I actually think the Chequers proposal is not ideal but broadly represents the kind of compromising package that protects Britain's industrial base, that protects agriculture and represents a positive position to take into the negotiations", he said.

May said: "No one wants a good deal more than me".

May was allowed to make her case to the 27 other European leaders in a Wednesday dinner speech - but was then excluded from their talks on Brexit the next morning.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, Davis said: "In the aftermath of our referendum vote, it was understandable that many of our continental friends were dismayed or even angry". To deny its legitimacy, or frustrate its result, threatens public trust our democracy.
