Tesla Model 3 gets five star rating in NHTSA crash tests

A video of a Tesla Model 3 crashing is rarely cause for celebration.

The NHTSA conducted tests to simulate head-on collisions, crashes into side barriers and poles and rollovers, and the Model 3 earned the top rating in every category, according to the agency's website. But that's only half the story.

Model 3's advanced safety tech landed it the top rating for front-crash prevention tech. The NHTSA tested the Model 3 on frontal crash, side crash, and rollover safety; and in all the categories and subcategories of the organization's tests, the Model 3 performed superbly, displaying a level of industry-leading driver and passenger safety. He took to Twitter to reveal the organization will soon be posting its safety stats which the CEO believes Model 3 could lead. The Model 3 also underwent side pole testing created to mimic the outcome of a Model 3 crashing into a fixed object like a sturdy tree. Everything else is present as standard equipment.

In the latter test, the Model 3 earned a rollover resistance score of 6.60 percent. Neither of which are especially easy to get. The rollover test measures the risk of rollover in a single-vehicle incident. Consumer Reports initially denied the Model 3 its coveted "Recommended" rating due to the vehicle's variance in braking distances, which Tesla promptly addressed through an over-the-air software update. That test simulated an intersection collision between a standing vehicle and a moving barrier at 38.5 miles per hour.
