Sushma Swaraj will meet Pakistan foreign minister in NY

India Pakistan agree to open dialogue again

India on Friday called off the upcoming meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi that was to be held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in NY, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

In the letter, Imran Khan has called for a meeting between foreign ministers of both the countries on sidelines of the UNGA in NY, which is to be held later this month. India has since put the responsibility of creating the proper environment for talks on Pakistan's shoulders. "In view of the changed situation, there will be no meeting between the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan in NY", he said.

Pakistan is slated to to host the SAARC Summit, but since Uri terror strike that killed 17 Indian army personnel in September 2016, New Delhi is leading the boycott of such a regional meet in Islamabad.

In the letter, Mr. Khan also suggested that the two Foreign Ministers could discuss the holding of the SAARC summit in Islamabad, which has been delayed due to India's reluctance to join. "Continued cross-border terrorism from Pakistan remains a core concern for us".

He said just like Pakistan, India also on many occasions signalled for talk.

The development came hours after Pakistan said it was yet to hear from India following Pakistan PM Imran Khan's letter to PM Narendra Modi. On the sidelines, Qureshi will hold meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov among others.

PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, however, took to Twitter to condemn the move, saying: "Shame that on #InternationalPeaceDay India has refused to talk peace with Pakistan in even a routine manner at the @UN on the sidelines of the General Assembly".

This week Pakistan said there was no formal communications so far between Islamabad and New Delhi over the opening of Kartarpur Corridor. "And sometimes credit should also be given to us". "Pakistan and India have an undeniably challenging relationship".

"Prospects for India-Pakistan ties are not particularly good".
