NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank say online banking glitch 'resolved'

NatWest and RBS suffer online and mobile banking borkage

The pressure on retail banks to bolster their technology infrastructure has been heightened in recent years as they have proceeded with cutting down on high street branches, making customers increasingly reliant on digital services to manage their finances.

The banking problems follow TSB's huge IT meltdown earlier this year, after a botched IT switch saw millions of customers locked out of accounts.

RBS blamed a "technical issue" for rendering their online services unavailable to customers for approximately four hours before systems were fully restored just after 10am. Millions across the United Kingdom and Ireland were said to be affected as the issued also affected Nat West and RBS customers.

Customers of RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank are now unable to access their accounts through the banking group's online and app platforms.

Natwest's mobile app couldn't establish a connection, and referred users to an online status page, which failed to open, a problem shared by Ulster and the two consumer banks' parent bank, RBS.

RBS said it has fixed problems which left frustrated customers locked out of their online and mobile accounts.

"The team are working very hard to get it back up for our customers. every so often we do have difficulties", he told LBC.

Combined, the three brands have about eight million online and mobile customers.

NatWest customers took to social media to complain about the issue, saying they would be unable to pay their bills or access their money. "How can we trust you with our money?"

Earlier this month, RBS announced plans to swing the axe on another 54 branches, 14 of which are the last bank in town - meaning there are no other bank or building society branches in those areas.
